Snare sound on Al Green's call Me

What do people make of that snare sound on the song Call Me?

For me, it isn’t just the sound of snare.( bad as it is )
It’s the repetitive nature of it, together with the incessant nature of the other main drum sound. I think closed hi-hat.
It’s just boring drumming.

love his voice though, and this carries it.

That's more or less the drum sound on almost all of Al's classic early 70s stuff. I don't have a problem with it myself, YMMV.
One man's boring drumming is another man's groove.

But what sort of snare sound? Military band? Led Zeppelin? Ringo? There are as many snare sounds as there are drummers.

Either the drummer is disengaging / engaging the snare wires throughout the track or they're hitting a tom for most of the track only using snare occasionally.

The 70s flat sound doesn't help.
