Sending used hifi to USA

If I sell some used hifi to somebody in the US does he have to pay duty on it at US customs or is it duty free as its used. It is European originated equipment if that makes any difference.
Also if I arrange the courier does that implicate me in those costs? The value is around 2k so It won't be peanuts.

I sent some used recording gear over. there is a bit of paperwork to do for USA tax reasons at both ends. I didn't fill something in right and they seized it. I had to email some additional paperwork over. It is definitely tougher over there.
