I don't think he was underrated. He was so natural in his acting ('cos that's what it is) that you were always fully aware of how good he was. His life and the trials around him will have made him a better serious actor if only he had been given those roles on TV more often and we'd been able to see it, not just on the stage. A great loss.
It's also clear that he was much loved by everyone, both colleagues and public.
