Sad news. The thread on the good stuff you valued about the Beeb, made me recall Z Cars. Now one of my favourite actors has passed away. I particularly liked his role as the Schoolteacher in Kes, his acting just so realistic it was like watching a documentary.
 
Great actor I remember watching when I was a kid. I had no idea that he also wrote the screenplay for Chariots of Fire. What a talented man.

What a sad end. Always liked him as an actor.

He used to teach at the school next door (literally) to the one that I went to.
 
When the BBC talks about 'talent', this man had real talent! A household name as an actor and a great writer. R.I.P
 
Would that be Bedford High School in Leigh. They amalgamated the Boys Grammar and Secondary School to make one split site school. Happiest days of my teaching career spent there.

Yes, that's right. I went to the grammar school and Welland taught at the secondary modern school next to it.
