Rail companies but no railway system

I wish you would all get this. It isn't about running railways. It is about making money. And if the Private sector can't make money via their 'legendary (and mythical) efficiency and good business sense'.. they make damned sure they make it via subsidy and indefensible fares.

FFS, this is the Tory Agenda since 1979 in a nutshell and the population of this country still don't get it.

Oh, we already got it !
But when people suggest that foreign railway companies are better at running UK railways, they need to take a more careful look.

Of course its about making money. We live in a capitalist society. Even the good old Labour party accept that. Socialism and communism simply don't generate enough wealth to enable anything to be "nice". Occasionally, private enterprise does make a few things "nice"

Yet Cuba scores well for health and education

Ok. maybe we should then aim for the socialist state run railway model of Cuba.

Public railways operated by Ferrocarriles de Cuba serve all of the provincial capitals and are a unique way to experience Cuba, as long as you have the patience of a saint and the stamina of a prize fighter.

Old trains and fuel shortages set you up for delays. Travelers report long delays, non-functional bathrooms, police removing passengers for on-board offenses and other passengers having fits or getting kicked off. It is not for the faint of heart. Cubans who have the budget to travel by other means do so.

The departure information provided is purely theoretical. Getting a ticket is usually no problem, as there's a quota for tourists paying in convertibles.

Foreigners must pay for their tickets in cash, but prices are reasonable and the carriages, though old and worn, are fairly comfortable. The toilets are foul – bring toilet paper. Watch your luggage on overnight trips and bring your own food. Only the Tren Francés has snack facilities, although vendors often come through the train selling coffee (you supply the cup).

Simply pointing out the error of claiming "socialism and communism simply don't generate enough wealth to enable anything to be "nice".

Many are quick to condemn what we have, as the OP chose to, and assume that under different leadership things could be so much better.

Though maybe not.

I have never travelled on the Cuban rail system but it sounds like fun, take your own loo roll and cup for your coffee. The train may or may not turn up.

Of course if you complain about it, you are likely to be locked up without trial...

Even under the present bunch of terminal ****wits we do not yet live in a totally capitalist economy. But that is surelywhat the Tories want.
We still have remnants of a mixed economy.
We need more.

No. We live in a crapitalist society.

Yet Cuba scores well for health and education, and that's in spite of the embargo.
And the NHS is fundamentally socialist.
The Cuban rail system is better than the Orkney one. Am I right?
