Quad upgrading

kenworthy

For a little while I have been thinking of upgrading my power amp (up to spec and serviced 303) either by finding another 303 and bridging or going for a 606mk2 (haven't been able to find a mk2 available). The rest of my system is a Roksan Xerxes, Quad 34, marantz sa15s2 and Quad 12L2.

Would welcome some ideas and views on alternative powers amps.

As the 303 has been serviced I'd be inclined to stick with it.

There are only two real reasons to change it:

- driving low impedance loads
- playing at levels that make it clip

If you want something that is technically better, will go louder and be pretty future proof wrt loudspeaker loads, a 606 ticks all boxes.

All good choices, I went from 303 to 405 and then to Meridian 105. These are very nice and if prices are still reasonable then you could do a lot worse. Service was very good when I had one go pop. If you want to try a brand other than Quad without changing flavour too radically then Meridian could do it for you. One thing they do better than the 405 is drive low impedance loads, other than that the 405 is a very good amp.
