Quad amps back from Quad factory service

Got the 606 Mk2 and the 66 pre is coming in a minute from DPD.

Really pleased so far, has taken 8 weeks but they’ve both had a full service. The pre has had a few caps replaced and all its neon backlight bulbs changed and a full check. The 606 has had a number of caps changed, and some precision wire wound 560 Ω resistors changed.

The 606 also had the entire power supply including the transformer and the big power supply capacitors changed to the 909 spec.

I think the pre has had the phono card converted to 100pf input.

Both delivered back and two new printed manuals supplied. £324 all complete.

I’ll get them plugged in and we’ll see how they are. I was getting a little mechanical and electrical hum before and possibly a lack of bass control. The Audiolab 8000A I plugged in as a spare was immediately a bit better so something wasn’t right.

Very pleased with the service so far. I asked them to go over them with a fine tooth comb and change everything needed for long term health regardless of cost.

You could send them off to one of the other excellent UK amp specialists and get an upgrade or mod, I think the cost would be much higher. Not sure you could get an entire power supply upgrade.. Quad charged £7.50 for each of the large power supply capacitors for goodness sake. There’s a hefty discount on the parts prices.

Looking forward to plugging them into the Ruark Crusaders. I’m also going to try the 8000A as a pre as I wonder if it’s got a better phono stage than the 66.

8 weeks - I often wonder why some companies just seem to hold onto stuff. I got an EAR power amp serviced recently and it was a three day turnaround including courier both ways.

It’s just what they’ve currently got in their workshop queue. I think it’s a little longer than normal. In the summer it was 4/5 weeks. When I got my quote through and approved it, it was completed inside of a couple of days.

My brother sent his Quad amp to be sorted at Quad, and they had just had a holiday shutdown, apparently, maybe that's the reason for the current backlog and time taken to service?

Hi Blue Belle, they did say that would happen when I dropped off. I’m happy with the 8 weeks?

I’m very pleased with the cost given 2 amps will all that work and parts changed.

Should be a good upgrade with the beefier 909 power supply components- I understand that improves the current delivery spec on the amp. Hopefully the best of all worlds, UK made amp with the latest fatter power supply.

Last time I looked Dada were charging £80+ just for the power supply caps as a supply only. Hats off to Quad.

Need to plug it in though..!

I'll be interested to read what you think about the serviced amps. I have a 34 and 306 which, whilst working fine, could probably do with a once over. I was under the impression that the Quad service department were a good bet if there was a specific fault but didn't routinely change components if they're within spec however old they are. Perhaps I'm wrong with that assumption

I can deal with an eight week wait when it is an eight week wait and not several months as I've suffered before - not with Quad in fairness.

I think they’ll probably do whatever you like. If you wanted a full recap and specified that they’d run it. I suspect the Quad repair but don’t service mantra is a fallacy- they check all the components over. and replace whatever is out of spec. I don’t think they need the type of work Naim amps seem to regularly need- different cap types perhaps? Whatever it needs, the labour charge is fixed at £55+vat. Including shipping back.

I am always happy if the engineer gives me a time-frame and sticks to it.
I am never happy if the engineer gives me a time-frame and significantly exceeds it.
I won't use one that doesn't give a time-frame.

I’d need to check what the part was, it states ‘66 pre-amp 100uf kit’ but there was no explanation as to whether that was for the MM boards. I’d previously enquired if it was worth adjusting the 220pf standard loading, was told to leave it alone, but then that was on the invoice, so I assume they’ve probably altered the MM boards (as a matter of course?).

The part number on my invoice is:
66-100UF

If you want to investigate with IAG/Quad.

I’d wanted to open up the loading to be OK for Audio Technica which I understood wanted lower numbers. If I ever used one in the future.

Currently on a Dynavector 10x5 high output which shouldn’t care.
