Quad 44 phono stage - worth persevering with?

Just when I thought I'd got my Quad 44/405-2 sounding ok, the MC phono stage in the 44 is playing up.

There's a sort of background rumbling sound which gets louder as I turn the volume up. It's there even when there's no record being played. Doesn't do it on any of the other inputs.

So, is it worth getting the phono stage repaired (it's easy enough to remove), or is it time to get a standalone phono stage. I'm trying to reduce the amount of of hifi I've got, so I'd rather get the Quad phono repaired if possible, but not keen on throwing good money after bad.

Thanks

Mike

Mike, I would suggest you treat this as an opportunity, and buy a good phono stage. It does not take a lot of cash to easily better the 44 phono, and you can buy something with a small footprint. New-ish phono stages can give amazingly good results and will make quite a difference to your listening pleasure. I bettered all the vintage Quad phonos I tried (three of them), with a reasonably-priced Cambridge unit, a CP2, I think it was.
