Price opinions please?

I'm having difficulty pricing some of the items I'm going to be selling off shortly; Namely my Adcom GFA585Le's.

The problem is that they're so sodding uncommon in this country; Mine also have the optional rack mounts and cooling fans - either option is rare to find, having both on both amps is pretty much like finding rocking horse poo on your driveway.

The previous owner is a gentleman who repairs audio equipment for a living. Both amps have been serviced/recapped before my purchase just over a year ago. They're well respected amps in their field, basically they're a pair of adcom gfa565 circuits in a single box, sharing a large toroidal transformer. Neither is minty like my monoblocks, but they are in acceptable condition. They put 250wpc into 8ohms, both channels driven (and bear in mind that Adcom are notoriously conservative with their power figures).

I was thinking £700 per unit, does this seem reasonable?

Never seen them on sale in the UK, never seen them reviewed either. Bit of an unknown quantity.

Yeah, I snagged the only 2 I've ever seen, after asking the ebay seller a lot of questions (and getting answers he really should have put in his advert - like that he'd recapped, serviced and calibrated them). Working with hifishark, it seems that recent prices are around the £700 mark for good condition ones, without the rack ears or cooling fans. Previous owner used a heat gun for testing of the cooling fans, he never managed to get them to turn on under the strain of playing music.

These are from the original Adcom? Not the reborn one?

Yes indeed. The original GFA585LE - not the recent re-use of the name by Adcom (who themselves are now far-east owned, and making maximum use of nostalgia by making amps that look very similar to the originals, and recycling the classic model names. Apparently the new amps aren't too bad, but they're not Adcom Adcom, if you follow me).

These are the amps that have two GFA565 circuits in one box, pushing a conservative 250wpc at 8 ohms, stable down past 4 ohms.

I'd think you're in the ballpark (or generally correct range). In the US they (and a lot of other amps!) seem to go for around $1000.

The market will decide the value. What you need to think about is where to advertise them - you have already done so here.

I'm figuring eBay for the selloff, still umming and arring over the price to ask though :( Feels like I'm selling a kidney, or a child. Not that I get sentimental over audio, not me, oh no...

I was swapping messages with an Adcom specialist in the US of A, Chris Hoppe (hoppesbrain.com). He said that with the rebuild/recap work done on the 585LE's I'd be able to realise around $2k each in US, shame I'm not over there, and that they're UK spec! I could also really, really fancy a cheeseburger right now, but that's another matter. I think UK is going to be a tough market; There's a small but strong Adcom following here and in Europe, so I can hope. Hopefully Hifishark will send some potential customers my way.

That's rather useful - thank you. I shall lower my sights a little, I think. Mine are in better cosmetic condition, I wonder if that one had the fan fitted as well as the rack ears?

[edit] It's an early one, too - I've never seen a double digit serial number on one of these.
[edit edit] nope, doesn't have the optional top fan fitted. Someone got themselves a bargain though.
