pre amps

I have heard mixed solid-state / valve system several times, and it can be a very good combination.

Don't discount using a solid-state phono stage.

I think this was what was concerning me, not having heard this first hand...
Should also not be as heavy? or as hot, if both were valve amps...My amp is 8 EL34.

Re' tonearm compatibility.
I forgot to add. I have chose the finewire standard C37. With RCA connectors.
Will this have an impact on choice of cartridge, stylus..
Also, set my heart on a wood headshell, however finance may leave me disappointed?

Talk about off topic?...It's all about having the perfect combination of system.
Tonearm, cartridge, TT, phono stage, integrated amp, Tannoy.

Lovely place Roslin tho'...Been there many times... Live not too far...West Lothian.

Seems, this is the classic combination...
Not knowing too much about the lifespan of a cartridge stylus...
Can anyone hazard a guess. I'm talking about if it is in top condition as suggested in the ad'.
This will off course will mean I have at least committed to a MC.

If it's a genuine 40 hours, then it's hardly been used at all. A modern elliptical stylus should last 600-1000 hours. If it's a line-contact stylus then it will in all probablity use a grain-orientated diamond, which puts the edge on the hardest direction. In these cases 1500hours+ can be expected.

A spherical stylus, by it's very nature doesn't have an orientation, so I would have it checked after 600 hours. There's a good chance it will last a fair bit longer, depending on the tracking force. Shures, which tracked at around 1 gm, generally advised replacement at 1000 hours.

Well done. someone has done their homework, very useful info'.
Sound a bit like jonathan noble DIYing a time machine from the analogdept.com.

Thanks,

Carol

Looks nice stuff and reasonable price. Tonearm cable from 401 into step up then interconnects from step up to RIAA phono stage then interconnects from this into line stage input on your integrated.

Then sit back and enjoy the music.

I have sent you a PM
