Pics of your pets (part III)

Red, this evening

visiting time by Pete, on Flickr

Tonight she's spending her 4th night in hospital with a nasty bout of Haemorrhagic Gastroenteritis.

Had it once before and bounced back quite quickly after being treated at the vet and sent home with medication, not to be the case this time. Began vomiting at 5:30 on Thursday morning, noticed some blood around lunchtime and made an appointment - our vet was full but they arranged one at another branch. When they went to take her temperature she sprayed the room with blood.
Given the choice of outpatient or inpatient treatment, we were a bit blase and chose outpatient going by her previous experience but promised to keep a close eye on her. Couldn't get the medicine down her at home though until we crushed it up and mixed it with water and used a syringe to get her to swallow, and she was really restless, wanting outside and then crawling under bushes and then chairs inside. We got to bed at Two and then woke at Four, hearing her in distress, she'd wedged herself into a corner under a stool and couldn't get out with a pool of blood behind her. Once extricated her jaw was clamped shut and breathing very laboured, we thought we were losing her. Thankfully managed to get a cab to take us to the 24hr practice.
She's been on a drip ever since with pain relief and antibiotics, and then a feeding tube fitted this afternoon as she hadn't eaten since last Wednesday.

One difference between this time and last time, apart from age not being on her side , was that she was given morphine along with an anti-emetic injection the first time round, this time just the anti emetic initially before going home.

Much brighter when we visited this afternoon/evening, even managing a wee wander round the garden.
Hoping to get her home soon.

It's costing an absolute fortune

Thanks John. She's nearly 16, so a good age. We just want her to get through this and then make the most of however long she has left with us. Her health has always been pretty good (apart from the previous bout) and just her back legs starting to get wobbly. The longest she's been away from us, since arriving from Battersea Dogs home 13 and a bit years ago. Not the same without her.

I think this is Bess's first ever toy. We tend not to have them because they last seconds - Blue is a destroyer.
She is absolutely delighted with it.

cat treats....Ziggy gets very excited

Mine get excited for treats. But if there's bacon to be had, they go ape shit. Oscar will eat all his own bacon, then eat all of Henry's too, and Henry lets him. I have to sneak some to Henry in another room while Oscar is distracted.

These treats are dental biscuits, they are only meant to have one or two each per day - but they both go apeshit crazy for them.

they don't have a huge interest in the food we eat. Ziggy loves butter, but not cheese. Marley loves cheese, and the crumbs from toast.

a wee update on Red

back home by Pete, on Flickr

She came home on Tuesday night - a trial to see if we could get her eating and because they thought she was getting a bit depressed there. Was glad when she did start eating somethin on Wednesday , they'd said she might not be hungry the first night as they'd feed her a lot by tube.
A bit worried that this has all taken a lot out of her. Her back legs were pretty wbbly but she would go for a walk around the houses most evenings without much bother. Now she needs support and even with a sling isn't walking well, herback paws are knuckling over rather than walking on the pads and she's managed to graze them. Hoping she just needs to regain strength and she had been off some of her meds. We have a follow up with our regular vet on Tuesday.
Been having alook throughthe bill and it confirms our suspicion that she wasn't given pain relief at the initial appointment. Also glad that we signed up to Medivet' s health plan last month - monthly payment to cover the 6 monthly check ups, vaccinations and flea and worming treatment as it also gives you 10% off medications. That has saved us just under £250. We had to cancel her insurance when she was 8 as it was going up to £100 a month then and we just couldn't afford that. Every time she had needed a vet visit it had always come under the excess until then.
Since she's had this once before it probably wouldn't have been covered as a pre-existing condition.
Can't fault the way she was cared for at the Hendon hospital, everyone we met there said how sweet she was.
one item on the bill really is taking the piss - we were charged £11.58 for 3 paracetomol tablets

Poor we Fin is house bound for 3 weeks now

Hairline fracture in his front left leg and he's got a cold to top it off too... No op needed thankfully; just total rest (yeah, ok... He's a 9month old kitten); we're trying our best. He stays downstairs most of the time...
