The goods shed at Beaucourt Station, Somme, rebuilt in the 1930s, now lying derelict. The station served as a focal point in The Battle of the Ancre of 13th November 1916, the survivors of the Hood and Anson battalions of the Royal Naval Division, which had been decimated in the early stages, being rallied here by the extraordinary Lt Colonel Bernard Freyberg before successfully assaulting the German defences on the edge of the village. Freyberg won the VC for his efforts here, and was seriously wounded, one of 9 wounds received in WW1. He went on to command British & New Zealand forces in Greece and Crete during WW2, and the New Zealanders at Alamein and Monte Cassino. After the second war he served as Governor-General of New Zealand for some years.

Lovely shot. He sounds proper hardcore that Lt Colonel Bernard Freyberg. From wikipedia:

"Freyberg left New Zealand in March 1914. Records exist of him in San Francisco and in Mexico, where he may have taken part in the civil war then raging in that country, reportedly becoming a captain under Pancho Villa. Upon hearing of the outbreak of war in Europe in August 1914, he travelled to Britain via Los Angeles (where he won a swimming competition) and New York (where he won a prizefight), to earn money to cross the United States and the Atlantic"

Thanks James.

You will have also noted that he spent a total of ten and a half years of his life fighting Germans...

In the process of moving from Aperture to Lightroom and sorting photos I came across this pic of our late and much missed friend Cliff.

Taken at one of the London photo room meets in 2012:
