Oh Britain, what have you done (part XXII)?

It was a lead story two weeks ago.

No. Two weeks ago the lead stories were the shootings in Las Vegas, the solutions to those affected by the roll out for Universal Credit, Theresa May telling us we will bounce back from anti UK rulings and Clare Balding refuting accusations.

At least as far as the BBC is concerned. You can still read about all of those just visit their website.

Then try and find reference to the £490 billion...

Maybe its a ruse to plead poverty to Juncker...

You need to try harder: I carefully chose my words and posted "a lead story", and not "the".
Just a few hours ago you suggested the BBC was involved in a conspiracy to keep the ONS data quiet, so I'm taking your posts with even larger pinches of salt than usual.

Hmmmm this could be an interesting development if true:

May's government reportedly now wants a Swiss-style Brexit deal

Much less damaging than a hard Brexit/no deal but it'll send the Daily Mail/Daily Express/Brextremists into paroxyms of frothing rage.

Absent from this speculation, as usual, is any information that the EU would actually want to offer a Swiss-type deal to the UK. Conventional wisdom says that it would not, but maybe CW is wrong.

Why not? It is a bad deal compared to membership. No money from the EU and has to pay money in and also keep free movement

I don't think the EU is all that keen on negotiating lots of bilateral deals again like they did with the Swiss. But we'll see.

And yet I can still find almost every "lead story" from early October on the BBC News website. Just not this one. Either it was never there or appears to have disappeared. It's usually remarkably easy to find "lead stories" from a few weeks ago somewhere on line but happy to be proven wrong there.

One would also have hoped that such a bombshell might have caused similar ripples over a similar period as Harvey bloody Weinstein. Maybe I'm just being an idealist there.

Great to see such positive news today about Brexit progress accelerating now on the Beeb anyway...

The dark forces behind a hard Brexit?

"In its mission statement, Legatum openly admits its aim is to influence the British government on Brexit, and what it calls “other stakeholders”
...
Theresa May is being “shepherded” to a hard Brexit by a Dubai-based private capital investor from New Zealand, just so he and his multi-billionaire mates can get more lucrative UK government contracts unhindered by those pesky EU regulations on environmental protection and workplace rights such as rules relating to hazardous waste and pollution and statutory rights such as maternity and sickness leave, minimum wages etc etc" https://tompride.wordpress.com/2017...ionaire-dubai-based-new-zealand-fund-manager/

"Grayling's claims that we can grow more food dismissed as tripe"-

Laurence Olins, who chairs British Summer Fruits, said: “When I saw that interview, my mouth dropped and I thought this needs to be addressed,” he said. “I was just horrified. It is just indicative of the un-coordinated way the government is approaching Brexit. Our farmers are unable to find labour this year, never mind post-Brexit.

“I have farmers who are moving to Portugal because they know they are able to hire people from the subcontinent. They know this. To hear Grayling come out with this tripe beggars belief,” said Olins.
(The Guardian).
-another so-called expert havin a go. Back in yer fruit box mate..

Problem is, many people will believe Grayling. For example, all those who still think Brexit is a good idea. That's the constituency he's playing to. The object is not to convince people he's right, but to put obstacles in the way of backing out of Brexit.

Surely the Minister is entitled to put alternative facts. Just nine months ago The Great Patriot, Andrea Leadsome publicly assured farmers they'd still have a guaranteed supply of cheap European labour and government subsidy (the NHS can wave goodbye to that £350m a week...) to match the EU's, no longer enslaved by having to put up billboards saying where their funding came from.

He didn't even need to try and own it, he's made a tit of himself. If tariffs go on imported food, market forces will eventually lead to a boost in local produce without intervention.

And no I don't have any stats to support my opinion.

My understanding is that tariff free ( ie the hard Brexit* wet dream) food imports will wipe uncompetitive British food production out.

Other point to note is that noone in their piss-taking is finishing his sentence. 'We will grow more food and buy more from other countries around the world.'

If the EU tariffs are too high, this is a really obvious outcome. Unless you are going to eat mud or keep your protectionist EU flag flying and open / shop at an EU imported-food specialist shop for cashed up champagne liberals etc....EU olives 30 quid a basket anyone?

I can already see the Tesco EU aisle.

If we buy from other countries round the world it will drive down prices ( initially) and kill off British production. Mind you, all those Brexit voters will have their most cherished ambition become reality- to help the poor farmers of the third world. Who said Brexit wasn't all about altruism?

I imagine it will be sold as Tesco Finest - a premium product grown in an environmentally friendly and healthy manner that is less likely to result in your offspring suffering stunted growth.

Depends how it is managed, I think.

Depends how it is managed, I think.

That's the issue- they can't agree on how they're going to manage anything and even if they did, they lack the capacity to manage a task as complex as 'Brexit'.
Have you noticed how silent big business is at the moment? It's not that they're simply watching and waiting- they've been busy with their contingency plans while this government fights with itself. When the government eventually decides its irreversible course, that's when you'll see those plans announced and executed.

...

All over the Guardian today anyhow.

The Tories—the 'Government of fiscal responsibility'. What a laugh.
