Oh Britain, what have you done (part ∞+4)?

Migrant worker shortage due to Brexit?...

I just don't swallow this. There may be any number of reasons, as alluded to in the report (rapid economic growth and rising prosperity in Romania etc, opportunities to pick fruit closer to home). The UK remains part of the EU, there's nothing to prevent seasonal workers from coming here apart from improving factors at and closer home. The fall in sterling's value against the Euro was mentioned, but it isn't any lower than it was 6 or so years ago, and there were plenty of migrant workers then.

Pointing the finger at Brexit is, by and large, just bandwagonning, and bandwagonning in this instance by the apparently Brexit-biased BBC.

Of course Romanians are immune to a greater frequency of being told "f*** off back home". Because we all know that hostility to foreigners hasn't incresed post Brexit.

"Occam's razor is the problem-solving principle that, when presented with competing hypothetical answers to a problem, one should select the answer that makes the fewest assumptions."

Brexit has crashed Sterling and made Britain much more openly hostile to immigrants, especially in the longer term.

It certainly leaves a bad taste in the mouth, apart from the rotting produce. Maybe that's why EV didn't want to swallow it.

By gum, yes, it's a complete mystery, isn't it?
Love the hi-ris jacket, btw, ET.

The future where Prime Minister Gove presides over the collapse of the United Kingdom is coming true...

"Owen Jones ‏Verified account @OwenJones84 2h2 hours ago
Increasing chatter that Theresa May will fall.
Michael Gove has a good shot. His coalition of support stretches from Remainer Nicky Morgan to the Brexiteers. Tory MPs think he has the direction and energy May lacks.
One hiccup: electorally speaking, he's a cup of cold sick."

Bearing this in mind, I would recommend being in your bunker by mid-February at the latest.

By and large, it hasn't, except for peaks around Charlie Hebdo, the Brexit vote, Westminster & London Bridge, and Manchester attacks. The balance of the 'increase' in hate crime "are likely to be driven by improvements in crime recording by the police and by the police improving their identification of which offences are hate crime related." (Source gov.uk Hate Crime in England & Wales 2016/17). To which should be added greater ease, and anonymity, of reporting by alleged victims, and the fact that 'hate crime' is self-identified, that it has to be recorded by the police whether or not there is any proof or evidence, and that recording anything but an increase is officially considered to show the relevant police force as failing in respect of hate crime.

This country is amongst the most tolerant of immigrants in Europe.

Glib response, and meaningless in the context. As I pointed out, Sterling is no lower than it was 6 or 7 years ago, when there was plenty of immigrant and seasonal labour available, and when it wasn't unknown for farmers and/or gangmasters (usually of the same nationality as the workers) to house them in dirty and unheated intensive chicken houses. The facts are that it is now more attractive for the seasonal workers to work closer to home, where the economies are in a far better state than they were a few years ago and wages are becoming competitive.

As regards 'openly hostile', I very much doubt that your average Romanian seasonal picker has heard of Windrush, or of vans demanding that illegal immigrants return home, or would care if they had. It is completely irrelevant to them. EU seasonal workers enjoy an absolute right to come here and work, and hopefully will continue to do so.

A civilisation on the verge of collapse will resort to myths and magical thinking and look for a saviour. Naturally, that saviour turns out to be a self-confident, idiotic fraud. Who merely hastens the collapse.

Cue Michael Gove.

Those seasonal workers in Romania in the BBC article are identifying Brexit and the attitude behind it as a reason, so I guess it is relevant. Oh, and it appears another non-German country is doing well in the EU...

David Davis was due to present the Irish Backstop tomorrow morning. He's refused. It's now expected to be fronted by Karen Bradley instead. EVERYTHING IS GOING SWIMMINGLY"

Davis might (finally) be resigning.

"Mr Davis is backed by other Eurosceptic ministers, leaving the prime minister facing a major confrontation. “It has got very fraught,” said one friend of Mr Davis. “David is not very happy.” Another said: “We badly need some leadership from Number 10.” https://www.ft.com/content/bb75ccba-698a-11e8-8cf3-0c230fa67aec

Robert Peston says Davis could resign tomorrow.

9 months and a bit to go and all we have is chaos in the Cabinet.

Perhaps you'll point out the relevant passages, because I can't see them. The piece is here to save you going back a page.

Why should Romania not be doing well in GDP growth terms in the EU? It has had vast sums of taxpayer's dosh lavished upon it to haul its infrastructure up, and it is coming from a very low base.

David Davis, Minister for Doing Nothing 2016-2018, threatens to resign? Will anyone even notice it’s gone?
