Nikon F3

9JmV8f.jpg

My old one. It really has had a bollocking, but it works like a clock. I took the photo of old Raymond Trollat with it about 25 years ago.

I always wanted a Nikon F or F2 as they are just so damn cool/iconic. Just a total design classic IMHO. Best of breed being a silver finish F with the really simple eye-level prism viewfinder and fitted with a Nippon Kogaku 55mm/f1.2. If anyone says ‘SLR’ that is the image that pops into my mind.

I had an F with the big Photomic viewfinder - that was the classic F when I first got into photography, though I couldn’t afford one then. The thing that really annoyed me about the F was having to take the back off to change the film, which is odd because having to take the bottom of a Leica never did.

Whatever Mr. Spock is using is cool by me. Given the position of the shutter release — a position no unbroken finger can comfortably assume — I’d say an F.

From memory the F was developed from the earlier Nikon rangefinder camera and the shutter button is in the same place on that camera.

Steve,

That sounds familiar. I do like the look of the original F, but if I were to buy a classic Nikon today I'd go for an F2 with an eye-level finder. The ginormous photomic heads are useful to have, but they look like a bad addition to a house.

A nice side effect of that design is that it avoids the awful foam light seals which turn to goo.
I have a nice F with photomic ftn finder that I picked up cheap many years ago. I have never shot with it because it needs a service. I would like to pick up a plain prism for it but these are £££ now if you want one without dents or prism desilvering.

Andrew,

I'll live vicariously through Robby for now, but this thread has piqued my interest.

Stop it you guys right now!

I do NOT need another camera.
;–)
Joe

Hahaha, my sentiments exactly Joe. There's some frankly indecent camera porn on this thread. I'm ashamed to admit I was mildly aroused by Gromit's first pic, but by the end... :);):Do_O

I really don't need another camera body. I really don't need another camera body. I really don't need another camera body. I really don't need another camera body.

There, I've convinced myself, I think. ;—)

I do love the look of the F2 with eye-level finder, but the FM3a, especially with 45mm pancake and silver lady bug shutter release, is also iconic. It's not as rugged, but after more than 12 years it still looks and works fine.

Joe

I have and use Nikon FM, FM2, FE, F100, F5 and a mint F3HP. If I had to pick one camera it would be the F5. It’s built like a tank, has a fabulous metering system (only bettered by the expensive F6) and they are cheap even in good condition.
