New PC

Hi,

I'm looking for a new PC and would like an X99 hex core system with 32Gb of RAM and a Nvidia 970 graphics card. It'll be used for the odd game, software development and running numerous virtual machines.

Question is where to get it from and, no, I don't want to build it. I've looked at Scan, Chillblast, CyberPower and Wired2Fire but suggestions on others? (Don't want Mesh - they sucked a few years ago and I won't go back)

Thanks,
Matt

^^ Would it be possible for you to publish a link leading to your nice new kit or a component list?

Thanks guys, ordered from scan again in the end.

Hi Matt,

I can relate to the "no, I don't want to build it" but few, if any, of the main brands offer "standard configuration-based" systems that meet my needs.

The approach I've found to work for me is to configure the system and then get some other sucker to do the sourcing and build of the configuration.

Having been diagnosed in June last year with cancer of the oesophagus, I've held back on a new PC and just done some component replacements. But after 9 weeks of chemo, 6 weeks of radiation and now waiting for the results of a PET scan, I am re-looking at the new PC aspect. I have an e-tailer I use for sourcing and they also offer a build service to spec. My requirements differ from yours but also tend to diverge from most standard off-the-shelf configurations.

Current desktop (also built by the same folks) comprises:

a) Lian-Li PC-Z60 mid-tower chassis with 6 x 3.5" SATA6G hot-swap bays, etc
b) Asrock Z77 Fatality Professional motherboard
c) Intel Core i7-3770 (locked clock multiplier)
d) 16GB DDR3-1600 CL9 RAM (G.Skill Ares)
e) EVGA GTX970 SC ACX2.0 graphics card
f) Asus Xonar HDAV1.3 sound card
g) 6 x 6TB hard drives in hot-swap bays
h) 1 x 256GB SSD (OCZ Vertex 4)
i) 1 x 750GB hard drive (MS Office data drive)
j) Corsair AX850 power supply

Next stop:

a) Switch chassis to Lian-Li PC-Z70 full tower (9 x hot-swap 3.5" bays)
b) Move to Asus Z97 Deluxe motherboard + Intel Core i7 4790K
c) Change to Samsung 512GB 850PRO SSD
d) Up RAM to 32GB Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR3-1600 CL7
e) Add Intel PCIe 8-port SATA RAID controller
f) Add 3 more 6TB drives
g) Add Corsair AX860i

By adding some other bits already sitting in a drawer, I can wind up with a slightly de-populated current system that is still functional and pass it down to youngster but wind up with the extra capacity I need - particularly for storage.

These Lian-Li Diamond series cases, with their combination of hot-swap drive bays and tool-less options for expansion, power supply, optical drives, etc. make for "easy-to-tweak" systems. Just unclip front-panel, slot in another drive, initialise the mutha and away you go).

The recent switch from GTX670 to GTX970 was a doddle...

The e-tailer is prepared to take in my current system, source the additional bits, re-configure/build the two systems, load all the software and test it all prior to handing over the two systems - and the prices for the value-added services are not that prohibitive (certainly a lot less than the amount I'd charge for my equivalent time...)

I know it's now a bit late... :) Just bear in mind for next time.

;)

That sounds like a great machine and sorry to hear about your illness and hope all is well. Just out of interest, why so much storage and wouldn't a dedicated NAS be better? Build it was tempting as I can do it and it's fun but I don't have the time and can't be bothered with hassle if something doesn't work.

Here's what I went for in the end - the ram I'm getting is a little faster than what's listed... The motherboard was expensive but they're supposed to be great and it has Intel NIC and built in wifi saving on the need for a card or usb adaptor.

We have the house wired with 1Gbps Cat5e Ethernet and this PC serves as a digital media server across the network. Media files include Digicam images, Camcorder files, ripped vinyl, ripped CDs, etc. The recent switch from 6 x 3TB drives to 6 x 6TB drives was done because all 6 3TB drives were sitting at >90% used and I needed more space to re-org and for some incremental media additions from Camcorder and Digicam.

I do have a 2-bay NAS bought as a "test-the-water" approach, but the 1Gbps Ethernet bandwidth effectively caps data bandwidth to a theoretical maximum of 1024 / 8 = 125 MBps which is much slower than the 180-185 MBps transfer rate achieved when backing up to a USB 3.0 drive. (NAS now used mainly for FTP-based file transfers - work-related - where the NAS runs 24x7 while only drawing ~25 watts from the mains while doing so).

Here's what I went for in the end - the ram I'm getting is a little faster than what's listed... The motherboard was expensive but they're supposed to be great and it has Intel NIC and built in wifi saving on the need for a card or usb adaptor.

Very nice indeed...

Asus Deluxe motherboards are excellent with current Intel PCH chipsets (X99/Z97) bu the Z77 version available when I bought current system was weak when benched against the Asrock - hence the decision. Next board, the tables have turned and the Z97 Deluxe is on top again.

The 512GB Samsung 850PRO SSD is sitting in a drawer just waiting for me to install it...

Right now, contract work is occupying my time and I need to keep the media server and FTP NAS and home network up and running, so 850PRO will have to wait... :)

Good luck with the new acquisition - may it deliver on all fronts!

Dave

Just an update - asus board sucked, so unreliable it went back and scan replaced it with an equivalent msi board and so far so good. They said they were going to stop supplying the original asus board because of problems.

Some tweaks since...
- another ssd
- msi gti980 it lightning
- x34 predator monitor
- oculus rift ordered

Hi Mattski,

Surprised (and sorry) to hear of your problems with the Asus board - strange - and will check with my neighbour who runs a PC eTailer business and get his views on whether this was a general problem or specific to that board.

That build is, by now, one serious monster....

An update from this end:

The PC-Z70 build is now complete and stable with some minor changes since last post (changes in red):

Case: Lian Li PC-Z70 (with 6 x fans)
PSU: Corsair AX860
Mobo: Asrock X99X Killer (LGA2011-3)
CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K
Cooler: Corsair Hydro H80i
RAM: 4 x 8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4-2133
GPU: EVGA GTX970
ODD: Asus 24x DVD-R/W & LG 12x BluRay R/W
SSD: Samsung 512GB 850PRO
HDD: 9 x 6TB SATA6G (mix of WD and Seagate) - was 6 x 6TB & 3 x 3TB)
Sound: Asus Xonar U7 Echelon
Speakers: Krator Neso 2 (2x18watt)
Monitor: Dell Ultrasharp U2515H (IPS 25" 2560x1440)

Inputs: Microsoft Desktop 3000 (keyboard & mouse)
O/S: Windows 8.1 Professional 64-bit

Fast and quiet - ideal for study workhorse... :)

Due to study desktop real estate limitations, will leave the 27" Asus PA279Q on the other desktop (PC-Z60 / i7-3770 / 16GB / 512GB 850PRO / 8x 3TB HDD / GTX970 / Xonar HDAV 1.3 / Corsair SP2500 ).

This 25" Dell U2515H has a very narrow bezel and actually has a smaller footprint than the LG IPS23V 23" IPS FHD monitor it replaced). Pleasantly surprised with the picture quality though - particularly at the price...

The abovementioned neighbour is now trying to stir the pot in the laptop space... Asus Global have just announced the replacement version of my current N750...

The new N752 is very toothsome... Core-i7-6700M (Skylake), DDR4 RAM support, 17.3" 4K IPS screen, 512GB M.2 SSD plus 2 x 2.5" SATA bays.

Unfortunately for him, I'm very happy with the N750 after upgrades (16GB Vengeance RAM, 256GB 850PRO, WD Red 1TB) - so, while mouth-watering, I won't be biting on that bit of bait... :)

So, enjoy your "beast" (I know I'm enjoying mine)

Dave
