These are fantastic times for an old space fan as me. When I was 8 I put three wooden boxes on top of each other and seated myself in the uppermost one. I had some kind of hunch that rockets was made up of different stages...

Mars has the worst atmosphere, too thin for parachutes to work well and thick enough that you have to slow down at altitude or burn up, so you cannot do the lunar landing big retro rocket option

Yes, two of the things you stated wouldn't work with a Mars lander.
