New google mail fonts / layout

I've noticed my gmail inbox has switched overnight to a new layout. This includes new fonts and extensive usage of boldface throughout. It all looks horrible on my monitor (a respectable Dell IPS 16:10 1920x1200): the spacing between letters in words looks ever so slightly off (uneven). Everything is so busy and hard on the eye. I am struggling to see any improvement at all in this change.

I've been thinking whether this new layout has been optimised for 4k or hi resolution monitors and looks shite on old 1080p ones. But surely I'm not the only one who is still perfectly happy with a non 4k monitor.

Has anyone else noticed this? Just checking before I contact google directly to open an issue.

You can no longer go back to the old "Classic Look" as far as I know. Try clicking the Settings Cog and choose Display Density = Comfortable

I am not a fan either
