New Ford Escort Mk 2 for sale shortly.

If only they'd revisit the Lancia Delta Integrale ;) Always wanted one, has to be yellow though and a factory RHD conversion... Rare as hens back molars with no fillings or plaque!

Inspired by all the rallying Escorts of the late 70's I decided to chuck my dads 1.1 Escort Estate about a bit - ended upside down in a ditch, happy days.

Fail to see the point, never a fan of Ford & Escorts have always been poor. Rather have an actual classic Merc or BMW for same money.

You’re not their target audience. And an old Merc can destroy a bank account and will be a stodgy yawnfest to the new Escort buyer.

i did the same with a datsun 1200 coupe. i got a bit carried away rallying the thing before any of the rally upgrades were fitted.

it's not just the shit cars they do it to (escort/mgb/mini). there are not 'retromod' (puke!) versions of heaps of iconic cars (911/alfa//elan/etc).

the fun bit is watching the fleece and sandal brigade go absolutely nutsack when you suggest anything that isn't standard.

"zetec in a baby elan - hanging's not good enough!!!"

The early Escorts were not poor by the stds of the day they were a mass produced family car and significantly cheaper than the Merc's and BMW's of that period.

I had a Mk1 1300 GT Escort and it was light, wonderful gearbox and very entertaining handling teaching a teenager the joys of sliding the rear end in the wet.

I am probably the target audience having had a few Fords (Mk1 Escort, Mk1 Capri 2.0 GT, Sierra 2.0Ghia (first company car) Mondeo 2.0 Si Mk1, Mk1 Focus 2.0 Ghia) before being tempted to the German side.

Classic period Mercs from 80s & 90s are seriously well made & the saloons are not silly money. You are correct though, I am not their target audience, I used to sell Ford's back in the early 90s & they really were very shit.

I've just never liked Ford's, actually prefered Vauxhalls back in the day. Prices of some Ford's are creeping up into merc/BMW territory.

And yet if you speak to any genuine petrol head they'd bite your hand off for a go in a proper set up mk1/mk2 Escort, not such a big queue for a go in a 230SL though I reckon.

If by petrol head you mean bloke of a certain age you are probably right but I know which I would rather own & it wouldn't be an Escort.

Because back in the day they were a Barry Boy motor car, along with the Capri. Then in the 80s it was the XR3i, Subarus attracted the same crowd a few years later and were the favourite "Council Estate Express" of their time. As they become scarcer and the ones that survive are better looked after they become less chavvy and more collected.

I'm not sure what the current equivalent is. Scruffy Audi A3s and recent-ish model Golfs, maybe.

I can't stand Escorts or Capri's for just those reasons... I always think of them as plasticky shite quality boy racer cars that probably carried "Kev and Shaz", according to green tinted visor strip, to the local amusement arcade, after which they would "race" at speeds up to a heady 90MPH flat out to a local dive of a pub where Kev would give it the old "did you look at my pint tosser" to some guy half his size who was minding his own business... Naff beyond redemption.

Petrolhead isn't age related, it means a car enthusiast.
I think you missed my point, it is about people revisiting their youth. I do know what a petrol head is. My wife is more interested in sporty cars than I am & she wouldn't go near a Ford. She prefers Golf GTi's & Civic Type Rs. Each to their own

It's nothing to do with revisiting their youth, it sounds like you really don't know what a petrolhead is. It's someone that appreciates anything interesting/quick/fun with four wheels, nothing to do with cost, status, build quality, on-paper performance figures, age of car or petrolhead.

I’m a petrolhead got a couple of classics too, but I’ve never owned a ford in 30 years of driving. I’m a bit too young I suppose, The Escort RS Turbo was released when I was a late teenager, and they were just un-affordable to buy - let alone insure!!

These are aimed at 55 year olds with disposable income and there are plenty of them about.

Someone above mentioned the Integrale... there was a TG (Maybe a GT??) where Clarkson drove a hand built modern version built by a complete petrol head Italian chap.. doing to a Lancia what Singer do for 911’s... it was glorious, but still had Italian electrics (ie, they didn’t work..) and was £250k plus I think.

I’m waiting for the MK2 golf to be reborn myself.
