A rather splendid recording of two French Te Deums:

I notice that Vincent Dumestre doesn't use a baton - could be because Jean-Baptiste accidentally killed himself with one while conducting this very piece? (He was beating time with a heavy staff, missed, hit his foot and died of the resulting gangrene a few weeks later - he stubbornly refused amputation, because this would have ended his dancing career).

I listened to the one piano-four hands performance of The Planets by Zoforbit (or Zofo as they're more commonly known) earlier and by Jupiter, it's absolutely fantastic! I'm frankly amazed this type of performance isn't as well known as the orchestral version because just as The Beatles were originally meant to be heard in Mono, Holst originally scored The Planets for one piano-four hands or two pianos (each with one pianist). It might not have the full impact of the orchestral version, by it's very dynamic and engaging nevertheless and unquestionably, The Planets; no ifs, no buts!

The audio options on the BDA (fwiw, it also comes with a CD) include 2.0 PCM and 5.0/7.0 DTS HD-MA and was recorded @ 24/192 and although the m/c track is of the atmospheric type, it works well. If you like The Planets, I can't recommend it highly enough :)

I ordered the Vaughan Williams 30CD collector's box on 5th March for under £30, when they were out of stock. Amazon sent me a few apologetic emails about delays, informing me that I could cancel at any time. But they eventually dispatched it - just delivered and should keep me happy this afternoon.

Quite a bargain I think, though the price seems to have gone up a trifle.

Update - superb, lovely dynamic remastering.

The Greig Peer Gynt incidental music by Neema Jarvi and the Gothenburg Symphony and Barbara Bonney. Worth 1p of anyone's money!

What do you think? I saw a few negative crits online, but I loved this - mind you , I am a paid up Abbado fan, especially of the Lucerne stuff, magic.

re Abbado's Lucerne Bruckner 9 - its good but doesn't have the mystery or depth of Wand & NDR from late 1980s, or Guilini/VPO.

Mm, interesting. Wand is for many THE man in Bruckner, but I do like things that Abbado does in places. As with all great music, plenty of room for multiple versions - at least in my collection !

Remember hearing his Philadelphia recording when I was young and being blown away by it.

Finally a Jo Sharp recommendation,
