New Classical purchases

I got that on download from Hyperion some time ago. Fabulous, although it did not have the art of fugue because she hadn't done it yet.

£45 in theory, but they give you 10% discount anyway so it's £40.50.

I downloaded her Art of the Fugue earlier this year, and it's excellent.

For £40 I think it's going to disappear from my 'to buy' list before too long.

JS Bach solo keyboard works played on the piano is my guilty pleasure. I already have the Schiff set on Decca, but there's always space for another.

Just ordered this well regarded SACD version of the Planets.

Actus Tragicus by Gesulado Consort, Amsterdam on Etcetera.

Heard Komm Jesu Komm from the disc on Radio 3 CD Review on Saturday and ordered it on the strength of that. A lovely disc. Cantata 106, Komm Jesu, Komm, Cantata 125, all leavened with organ pieces. Some fine performances, with the Motet being the stand-out for me.

(At that price, I didn't buy from Amazon; MDT were the cheapest.

Kantate 106 (Actus Tragicus) from this disc is on Radio 3 this morning at around 11h40.

My Holst SACD (see above) arrived today and after ripping it via my PS3, I played the 5.0 version and as expected it sounds fantastic! Once Mars had built up to full force, I was hooked right until the enchanting whispers of Neptune bade me farewell. It's well recorded and well performed and is easily the most enjoyable Planets I've heard.

Fwiw, it seems to have excellent dynamic range as it allowed me to push my AVR to -0db which allowed the dynamic range to be delivered at a good volume across the range i.e. the weightier notes had appropriate impact and the whisper notes were nicely audible.

After years of trying to find satisfying Beethoven Symphonies on CD - I found them! Klemperer.

It was rather obvious really , I have had the big LP box for 40 years. Back home.

(Rautavaara operas Thomas and Vincent arrived today, much listening to do).

It's very good, though I've not played it all yet, just the late period quartets. My Cambridge 651C really struggles to load the red book layer, though no issue playing it on the Rega Apollo or the SACD layer on the 752BD. Ripped fine into my Macbook too.

I listened to some of it on Spotify first & it sounds good at 128 kbps, so should be great on disk. I'll just rip it and listen to the red book source as I don't have anything to read the SACD layer - will report back if I have any problems playing the disks.

Yes indeed, and I only paid £21 for it from Amazon last week! Still the marketplace sellers are a lot cheaper.

I had one of the 4 CDs already and saw RSNO (I think) play one of her recent pieces a few years ago, which started my interest.
