It's a Cube Reaction Pro with 500w battery. https://www.freeborn.co.uk/cube-reaction-hybrid-hpa-pro-500-29-2017 Cube is German, although suspect at these prices they only assemble in Germany. They tend to clear the last years colours at Freeborn for £1600. I think I got another hundred off the web price just for calling for some reason or other. But mine was up at 1700 I think, and over the phone it was 1600. This was last year.

Here's the hybrid version.

I think that is as cheap as it gets in UK currently for a trustworthy battery and motor with 500w. As mentioned above, a grand gets you something possibly dodgy. A battery that will only do a morning's riding before a recharge is required and then needs replacing after 6 months is not a great intro to e-biking!

Other deals are to be had in Germany with a brand called Liqbike. They are regularly at 1800 Euros or less, often with 500w battery. All top component brands. Shimano, Tektro, and crucially latest Bosch battery and motor.

I have a Giant TCR road bike.
My very good local bike shop Banjo Cycles recommended either Trek or Specialised. High levels of comfort were one of the advantages.
Had no need to remember as I would talk to them if and when I want another.

Renewing the drive chain shortly.
Apparently my Shimano Ultegra 6700 (expensive one) from about 2015 is now about the same as the much cheaper Tiagra.
Not that impressed with the changing of the Ultegra so interested ot see how the Tiagra performs

I was in Halfords picking up a wiper blade yesterday and had a quick look at the Boardman CX Team which is a lot of bike for the current £900. Well worth a look as a potential alternative to a hybrid.

I've got a couple of Boardman road bikes (a Team Carbon from about 2010 and one of last years SLR endurances) and have been pretty impressed with them.

just to wind this up, I had a ride on an electric bike today and was impressed,,,cube something or other, Bosch electronics, shimano gearset. The motor had 4 settings. On it's lowest it simply cancels out the extra weight of the bike (24K !) and above that you get easier and easier hills. I like the choice and Cube seem very well made

BUT
I didn't like the price!

Decent hybrid road bike £6-800. Electric equiv, !800 upwards!

Hm.

Those E-bike options mentioned upthread seem nice and cheap to me. I was looking in Switzerland for Ebikes as a possible commuting solution and the top of the line Stromer E-bike is CHF10'000 (£7500). I had to go and have a lie down.

In the bike shop yesterday
Trek is the make. Patented comfy ride bits built into the frame.

Are you not referring to their normal bike range?

The tubing on that Cube above looks very thin, my Specialized Turbo has altogether stiffer stays. In fact it looks like a bike that has been converted to electric and not an electric bike frame designed from the outset.

Save for the outlay, ebikes make a compelling arguement for many.

Not really. If you look at the chain stays of my bike, you can see that they are altogether different:
They may be. It doesn't make a slimmer chainstay design inadequate or less tank like. An e bike adds 250W max to the cyclists legs, maybe 750W all up. Meanwhile Mark Cavendish s conventional bike is engineered to handle his 1000-1200 W peak power without looking heavy at all. Can cavs bike handle the power?
Also that other one with what looks like a battery bottle just looks a bit naff compared to an integrated into the down tube battery.
Whether you or I like the looks really does have nothing to do with the engineering quality!

Not so these days, the Stromer I was referring to upthread has an 850w motor with 48 Nm of torque. It's built like a tank though.

Ebikes are limited to 45km/h in Switzerland too, not 25km/h as in the rest of the EU. Makes them quite appealing as a commuting bike when covering decent distance. But alas, the price :(

250W legal max in the uk, and you have to pedal to get it. No assistance after 15mph. Sure, people have them tuned and doing 45mph, but that's illegal.

Ah, I didn't realise there was a 250w limit in the UK.

Probably makes sense to be honest. These latest Swiss ones are probably far too powerful in relation to the skills of many of the riders.

My friends sell both Specialized & Cube - they all ride Specialized ebikes. Both engineering and design are a step up.

My point is that the Specialized bikes look like they’ve been designed as ebikes, many others including Cube do not.

You can get a 45km/h ebike in the UK however it's classed as an electric moped, which is perhaps sensible. They're not even all that expensive. I see them from time to time in London.
