The problem being difficulty reading discs. This has been an issue for several years but has deteriorated recently and I have been told Something Must Be Done.
Interestingly, if the player is in nearly constant use discs usually play immediately (yes I know this presents a possible solution!). After a days off it takes repeated attempts, resulting in the dreaded ERR message, before deigning to play.
This is a late model CDM9 mech. version. It's not nexel disc wear and the usual puck rubber trickery or puck substitution has no effect.
