Naim Burndy

Mr Magoo

Hello. How are you?
Hi
Can anyone here help with this. I have an original Naim Burndy I used with a NAC52 and 52PS. It has 16 pins. Can this same Burndy be used with a NAC252 and Supercap?

Many thanks
Peter

The 52PS is going back a long time now. There were changes - I think - when the Supercap came along.

The trouble is that "I think" will not do. May I suggest that you make contact with Naim in Salisbury? They will give you chapter and verse on this with authority. And up till you have to get a suitable Burndy, the advice will not cost you anymore than an email or phone call.

Best wishes from George

PS:: I had a 52 with Supercap, and some of this was explained to me many years ago ...

In the past Naim were excellent if you contacted them with a technical query. However, about six weeks ago I had cause to contact them with a technical question and they were appalling. The young man I spoke to didn’t know anything and couldn’t (or wouldn’t) put me through to anyone who knew what they were talking about. Times have certainly changed (unfortunately) :(.

I’m almost certain the 52/252 burndies are different. Few years ago I assumed they were the same but weren’t and had to sell on. I’ve never used a 52ps though

From the NAIM website...

Burndy cables carry both signal and power, and feature dedicated, multi-pin, locking connectors. They are used with several of our power supplies and care should be taken to ensure that the correct cable is used in each application - the configuration of the cables varies with the particular units that are being linked.

The SXPS Burndy variant is used for the CDX, NDS, NDX, ND5 XS, DAC and HDX source products. There is also a Burndy variant for use with the SUPERLINE phonostage and the SNAXO and SNAXO BMR crossovers.

Consult with your Naim Audio specialist retailer to make sure you have the right Burndy connectors for your system.

Unfortunately they ditched the two very experienced guys who handled most of the tech support and set up a call centre type system under the direction of a total idiot who was put in place by Vervent. Fortunately that idiot has been removed after a virtual revolt by Naim dealers as they realised the damage this person has inflicted. There are still some good guys left there, although I suspect morale is still low as it’s not easy to undo that sort of mismanagement.

The Supercap added a couple of pins to the Burndy socket to make it a more universal power supply for use with SNAXOs etc. Therefore an original 16 pin wouldn't likely work in newer kit that was designed for use with the Supercap. The 52 and PS were sold as a single item with cabling so shouldn't be split up.

My HatPin18 Burndy cable will work with all variants of the 52PS/Supercap. It has all pins connected. Note that Naim made different versions for each unit but mine is universal. My action of separating power and signal means we don't need to disconnect unused power lines.

My thanks to all contributors. I sold my 52/52PS with the replacement HatPin from WH Audio. I recently found the original Naim Burndy. As I have no use for it, I thought it best to move it on. Just wanted to be clear on its suitability.

I have an early Burndy between the CDS / CDPS it’s grey colour and 13 pins. I was toying with idea of getting the later black one either The XPS or the S-XPS.

I spoken to Wayne at Cymbiosis who have two for sale but he told me he’d check with Naim. He told me the later black ones aren’t compatible, informing me that the CDS grey one only carry power. So stick with what you’ve got.

Regards,

Martin

All Burndys only carry power, and, according to Richard Dane, there is a black Burndy for CDS/CDPS, called the S-CDPS.

My 52/SC uses a black Burndy & SNAIC, but I've thought about trying the original grey variants, as older often seems better, IME, when it comes to Naim?

You’re welcome to try mine. I no longer have my 52/52PS. Message me if you’re interested

The Supercap Burndy carries signal and power and is the only one that does so, all the others carry power only.

Yes, my mistake - I was thinking purely of the 18 pin variants. The NAC552 uses a different number of pins and carries both signal and power.

Doh! Of course, my mistake. Thanks Tony and MJS.
In my defence, I was responding to Martin Dawson's post, and thinking about CD players.

I'm correct about the existence of S-CDPS, though... I think. ;)

Thank you for the kind offer. :)

However, and I'm getting even more confused now , I think that I need a different one for a Supercap powered 52 (though I have been wrong in the (very recent!) past, so who knows!)?

TBH, given their age, I really should get around to having them serviced (though they sound rather fine, to my ears), before I try such things as alternative Burndys. :)

No problem. I think the 18 pin variant is fine for the 52PS and Supercap. Let me know if you change your mind.
