Meridian CD 506 Fault. Disassembly Help?

I have an old, but much loved Meridian CD 506 that has started to play up. It can detect a disc, showing the No. of Tracks and the total playing time, BUT when I try and play the disc it has a little think and then emits a worrying mechanical noise for about 1 second and then gives up.

The noise is a bit like running a fingernail slowly along a comb and makes me think maybe a gear is stuck. I'd include a sound file of it, but I don't think attachments are allowed. (This is my 1st post btw)

I'm quite happy to take it appart to investigate, but before I start I just wondered if anyone has any tips about how to disassamble it. Trial and error is all very well but it's the 'error' bit I don't like. I've broken off enough plastic clips in the past to be wary!

The player is an old 16 bit model btw, Ser No. 203818, fwiw.

Thanks in advance.
