Mastering and musical appreciation

I suspect like many people the music of my late teens and college days are very important to me. I went to college in 1973. Almost all the music of those days I still listen to. I had a Connoisseur BD1, Acos Lustre arm, and Shure M95ED. Unfortunately some of my vinyl from those days has gone missing. I bought a CD of Joni Mitchell's Blue, and a compilation of John Denver's greatest hits on CD and they never recovered the magic of the 70s. In the last few weeks I have found the Joni Mitchell Blue with a sticker on the front saying it was remastered from the original master tapes, and a 2011 Sony re-release of John Denver's "ultimate collection". In both cases the magic of the music has returned just as I remembered it. I always thought that the music was much more important than the quality my hi-fi, and I could enjoy bad recordings. I now know this isn't always true.
