Linn LP 12 servicing and upgrade.

These anecdotes are all well and good, but it doesn't change the fact, that you shouldn't have to travel 200 miles and part with 200 quid to get a record player tuned.

Well only if you live 200 miles away, surely that can't be everyone?

Hi, I am I am based in SE London..

Says the OP...

...being directed by well meaning members, all over the country. My point is only, that, unless you are in exceptional circumstances (i.e. have no local dealer), your nearest dealer should do (assuming that Linn have chosen there dealers wisely and have given them sufficient product training).

You don't have to travel 200 miles for a service if you don't want to (for much though not all of the UK), nor do you have to pay for it. My deck has always been serviced free whenever I've had an upgrade fitted, and the latest upgrade was a trade in purchased from my nearest main dealer. The fitting cost of upgrades is included in Linn's retail prices and there's not much left to service after you've fitted most of them anyway.

Yes it’s supposed to, however the expert in Leicester had the cheek to charge me circus upgrade and fitting charge, hence I do my own now. It’s not rocket science and no pixie dust is required. It’s three springs and not very advanced or technical, hardly hitech.

My garage charges the same to service my Golf as the Linn dealer does to service the LP12 and he charges extra for the magic belt.
Just wait until your Golf needs its magic timing belt replaced!

Top tip: Make sure they do the belt tensioner too, even if they say it feels fine.

For those into DIY, Peter Swain has been kind enough to share his 3 volume 'Setting up your LP12' via his own Cymbiosis site, such that the demise of the Linn Forum didn't affect those interested in his sharing of his accumulated knowledge via his thread on the subject there...

Setting up your LP12: Volume I
Setting up your LP12: Volume II
Setting up your LP12: Volume III

Enjoy!

Speaking as one who has only ever owned LP12's...

Three volumes to set up a record deck that only has two moving parts that you can change the parameters of ?

It's like the very definition of a religious belief system..... first mystify the simple and then take control of it with elites.

I think if you check them out he is starting from scratch building an LP12 through a number of variations of parts for the LP12 plus setting up the arm and cartridge.

I used to watch the guy who set up LP12's up in Russ Andrews in Edinburgh and the difference between me trying to set the deck up in their workshop and him was quite revealing. However given that knowledge in those three volumes and with time and experience you will become good at getting the LP12 sounding very good.

The care, years of experience and knowledge of those tiny details some of which are in those three volumes when used by someone with that experience, (or gained by yourself over time) on an LP12 can mean the difference between the deck sounding great, keeping it's setup for years and the deck sounding plain, uninteresting, less detail revealed and going out of alignment in a short period of time.

One thing I have found over the years is that in a HiFi, be it the deck, preamp, amp, speakers or the complete system when combined with something like a well setup LP12 can mean the difference in bringing musical enjoyment or not.

Getting that combination right, and yes am sure most of us have tried many things to get this, can mean the difference between a system that allows you to enjoy the music than one that makes you want to change bits as you get no satisfaction and emotional experience from the music.

I have had a number of different systems over the years and the one item that has never changed has been my LP12, why, because it does bring music to life where other ones have not given that feeling, yes they may have extracted more detail, given a different presentation but in the end they lacked what the LP12 gives in terms of emotional enjoyment.

If your engine's water pump is driven off the timing belt get that changed at the same time!

Yes, depending upon which motor, the water pump is as much work/cost to change out. The ex's New Beetle GLX 1.8T had its water pump plastic(!) blades shatter to bits at under 100,000Km; dealer highly recommended doing the timing belt at the same time (usually recommended to be replaced at 125,000Km, IIRC), as the labour cost would be as much again soon enough.

In Canada, our VW tech equivalent of Peter Swain is Manfred (Fred) Werner; there is no one who knows more, or who is as precisely OCD as our Fred! He has been at the sister Porsche dealership for some years now and I still seek him out for VW advice and service.

I will share with you a hitherto closely guarded secret. Wherever you are in the world If you place your fingers upon an LP12 and lightly speak the name cymbiosis three times, Peter swain magically appears in a puff of smoke with a retinue of audio monkeys to perform all servicing required.

More seriously there are dealers out there that focus more on delivering a good sound than on marketing their prowess.

Colin is a top bloke and his bias is totally towards customer satisfaction. He isn’t going to force you to buy a tranquillity.

Peter swain on the other hand although far from incompetent can’t hear what a crock the tranquillity is and is totally oblivious to recent developments. Overhyped by people that wouldn’t know a decent sound even if they weren’t listening through NS1000.

Ooooooh !... I think I know who you are eluding to ! ...I never get the "in-crowd skinny " normally but on this occasion...

Bit eggy of you though, don't you think?

Aren't all hi-fi mods just incremental steps ?

Its all just my opinion and its no more valid than anyone elses.

I find it very irritating that someone who doesnt even own an LP12 is recommending a Londoner travel over 100 miles north when there are plenty of more qualified and experienced dealers right on his doorstep.

I hope he never turns his hand to setting up and servicing the Sony PS-B80 turntable. There wont be enough storage room on the internet...

I'm amazed the distances people wish you to travel - by the time you've driven back it'll probably be out of alignment again! (only joking...)

I've been a customer of Grahams Hifi for nearly 40 years, and they have been looking after my Linn for nearly 30 of them. They are a *very* long established Linn and Naim dealer, and Ray Horn, their Sondek specialist, will be able to perform any upgrade or servicing you require. They are quite straightforward people to deal with in my experience, and as they live in Islington, not miles for you to travel. Try https://www.grahams.co.uk/contact if you wish to see if they can help you.

Good luck with your upgrade!

Grahams were excellent with me despite not having ever bought from them! My s/h 140 was making odd noises 20 odd years ago. As i'd bought the 140 from an established Grahams customer (who had bought it from them) they checked it out for free! It turned out to be radio interference which was sorted with repositioning.

That's pretty good i'd say

Well done Grahams (I live in the midlands now so I also shout for the excellent Cymbiosis)

Mike

Update.

Thanks once again for your recommendations and private messages.

I decided to take my L.P 12 deck along to Colin Macey in Beaconsfield, a short trip round the M25. I have to say I was instantly put at ease and knew that I had made the right decision as to who would service my deck. I auditioned a Linn Krystal cartridge on one of Colin’s many systems, my intensions were to have a service and a Kore fitted and hang on to my trusted Troika. Despite its age it has very low hours use, sometimes my system was never used in months even years, I once went 8 years without putting needle-on-the-record as my system was in storage for that period. I decided to go for the Krystal and feel that this cartridge will see me out. Colin sent my Aro tone arm away to Naim because of a poor earth, every time I went near the deck I got a low humming noise. This was rectified and also new head shell tags were fitted to allow for the new modern cartridge. I also had to have a new Lingo connector, unfortunately the part was no longer available so a newer Lingo connector and board were adapted. It was also decided that the deck needed a new motor. I was constantly updated while my deck was away and always felt at ease with my initial decision.

The deck is now back home and sounding superb. I would have no hesitation in recommending the services of Colin Macey at What You See And Here.
