I dug my old LP12 out of storage a couple of days ago to try it out and see how it sounded these days. In short - dreadful.
Sounded like there was a permanent ball of dust gathered under the stylus. A cursory inspection revealed that the collar on the plastic cueing platform for the arm is cracked, and the platform sags to the point where the arm won't clear the record using the cue alone.
Two questions really:
(i) Is the poor sound quality likely to be due to the cracked cueing mechanism - or is it likely that there are other problems afoot ?
(ii) Can the broken piece be repaired or replaced by somebody reasonably practical - but without recourse to specialised tools and equipment ?
and maybe a 3rd..
(iii) If it needs replaced - any idea from whom I might get the replacement parts without having to suffer the usual Linn King's ransom prices ?
