On my Voyd, the original hinges were knackered so I I replaced them with Linn lp12 hinges which are ok but not quite strong enough for the Voyd lid.
So I just remove the lid when playing records, possibly sounds better but I don't think about it much.
I can accept that a lid may capture sound waves. It also follows that a lid up would capture more sound waves than a lid down. A microphone with a parabolic reflector is usually used in the vertical plane to maximise sound capture.
Lid off. Less faff when changing records; might sound better. I have a deck with a beautiful, elegant appearance & I love watching the arm move across the record.
Lid off when playing, it’s really easy to remove and replace… I actually way prefer the look of an LP12 without it’s lid, although I put it back when not in use to keep the dust off.
I play lid up.... not that I think it matters, it is just convenient to not play with the lid during a record playing session.
I seem to remember some of the mags in the (80s?) got hot under the collar about the lid thing... one (IIRC) even went so far as to 'prove' that the static from the lid affected the stylus force (reduced it) if the lid was closed during playing!
