Kudos Titan 707 Goes Active With Naim

I've heard this combination before, but with a "development" SNAXO active crossover.

Last night I got the chance to hear the pre-production version (i.e. the one with the crossover components decided and signed off) in a comparison between passive and active operation.

The conclusion was easy and adds to the continuing mystery as to why more manufacturers don't offer active versions of their passive speakers. Kudos are clearly demonstrating that Devialet, Linn Exakt and Naim active brings so much more from a loudspeaker and the electronics manufacturers get to sell 2 or 3 times as many amplifiers. Why there isn't more of it, I'm puzzled by. Naim need to get this SNAXO into production and support more speakers too. A perfect example would be the Graham Audio LS5/9, a speaker originally conceived by the BBC to be operated in active mode.

It's a puzzle to me too Mr sunbeamgls. Active brings so much more to the party, & much as I hear and enjoy many good passive systems, the speed and coherency of the equivalent active option always trumps them. I guess most folks don't want the complexity and expense of all the extra boxes.

But once you have all the correct boxes there isn't really any going back.

Then again a lot of people get Naim active systems very wrong by thinking they can do it on the cheap or over time and end up with a load of mismatched amps that will never sound right together.

Not all active systems need lots of boxes, in fact some are pretty much self contained. It has always puzzled me that ATC don't sell more, or many other specialist speaker companies don't even attempt to.

But then as a passive system owner, I've never felt the need even having heard some fine active set ups. It is a different set of compromises so possibly not the slam dunk that theory would suggest. A lot depends on the quality of crossovers in the passive options I assume.

Have you heard them ( actives ) in your own room Steve?
Keith

No Keith, quite happy with what I have and spend more time sourcing some good choons.

"Actives" is a bit too generic Keith. What are you getting at? There are many passive systems that sound vastly better than some active systems. The idea that "an active" might be generically assumed to be better than "a passive" doesn't hold water.
