My very old & Kramer-modded Koss PortaPro finally disintegrated, so I bought a pair of $30 Kph30i & added giant Grado 1000-style $7 earpads : they are fantastic. I like them so much I have sold my HD650s !
They use the same drivers as the PortaPro, but sound slightly fuller in this configuration (can't be bothered to Kramer-mod: enjoying so much as is).
Disclaimer : at 68 and three-quarters, my hearing can no longer fully appreciate higher-end headphones... but these are still fantastic. There's a good Kph30i appreciation thread over at Head-Fi, where I learnt about the foam pads, which both improve the sound and make the 'phones very comfortable for longer listening sessions : https://www.head-fi.org/threads/koss-kph30i-appreciation-thread.915308/page-2.
The only issue is that they seem hard to find in Europe especially in the Rhythm Beige colour : I had them sent to a friend in Chicago, who kindly posted them over. The foam pads are direct from China via eBay.
... and, yes, people do give you strange looks if you wear them in public !
