Watched the first episode of the new season of The Crown. Charles is portrayed as a totally self-absorbed jerk.

It's worse than that, Dominic West is just way too good looking to play Charles. He does do a self-absorbed jerk well though.

This reminds me that the last time I was in Rome, we visited St Peter’s and found a handsome marble wall plaque “In memoriam, King Charles III of England”. After a bit, the penny dropped: Bonny Prince Charlie! He retired to Rome and was supported by the Vatican as the last chance to return Britain to Catholicism.
