jumping stylus on Thorens TD 166

My step son has just got a Thorens TD 166, and very nice it is too. I have just set it up and there are two 'problems'. The first is that the hinges are broken so I guess that is a waiting game on ebay or even here. The other is that the deck is very sensitive to footfall in the room and even just walking around will make the stylus jump. It is on a typical steel and glass rack at the moment. Is the only answer a wall shelf or would maybe a thick paving slab under the rack help in any way? Thanks

^^^ This. No suspended deck with it's center of gravity above the spring plane will cope with footfall as it actually amplifies the movement, i.e. the platter / arm ends up being thrown far further than if there were no suspension at all. A wall shelf removes the issue entirely at source.
