Indeed he was. An incredibly tallented, intelligent and funny man. One of my all time comedy heros, along with the rest of the Beyond the Fringe cast...Alan Bennet, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. So Alan Bennett is the last man standing.

I saw two live things by him which I don’t think I’ll ever forget. One was Monteverdi’s Orfeo, Charon rowing across the Styx with a single oar slowly to the pulse of his song, the only prop on the stage, Bostridge sang Orfeo, I remember him sitting on the edge of the stage writhing with pain when he learned that Euridice had been stolen. And the other was a staged St Matthew Passion with a fabulous Evangelist - something which probably opened up that music for me more than anything else.
Of the films, well his Alice in Wonderland is very impressive even today.
