The lucky few who have heard a well-integrated subwoofer in a great audio system know that the subwoofer's effect is profound. While everyone expects the bass extension to improve, most are shocked at the transformation that occurs in the main speakers. They simply open up, delivering improved dynamics, superior imaging and more low-level detail. Many describe it as the greatest speaker upgrade they have ever made.

Over the years, we have calibrated many subwoofer systems in highly critical listening environments, and we have been frustrated by the limitations of active crossovers we have worked with. Tired of struggling with "blunt instruments", we felt that a higher precision tool was needed, so we decided to build it and call it "CR-1". When properly set up, CR-1 creates a listening experience in which the subwoofers and main speakers become one, delivering a cohesive and compelling sonic presentation.

CR-1 is built around two banks of precision Linkwitz-Riley low-pass and high-pass filters. Multiplying DACs with monolithic ratio matching are employed to adjust the analogue circuit's filter frequencies. This offers superior tracking behaviour and far more precise left/right channel balance, compared to conventional approaches.

Another of CR-1's unique and powerful features is a pair of rotary controls that control the damping of each filter bank. These damping controls dramatically improve the acoustic summing through the crossover region, by compensating for each speaker system's frequency response. At the center of the front panel, a single intuitive, rotary control permits quick adjustment of the relative level between the subwoofer(s) and main speakers.

To minimize distortion and noise, CR-1 employs top-grade component parts in its all-analogue audio circuitry: 1% precision resistors, JFET-input audio-grade op-amps, polypropylene film-and-foil capacitors and metallized-polypropylene film capacitors, to name just a few. We also build CR-1 right here in the U.S.A., to ensure top quality and dependability.

CR-1's input-output design makes it equally adaptable to studio, mastering suite or audiophile two-channel playback environments. To accommodate dual-mode systems, we also include a bypass feature that engages a pass-through from a dedicated "Managed Bass Input" on the rear panel, to the CR-1's subwoofer outputs. This makes it convenient to switch from two-channel to multi-channel mode.

CR-1 is the ultimate tool for subwoofer integration.

CR-1 is built around two banks of precision Linkwitz-Riley low-pass and high-pass filters. Multiplying DACs with monolithic ratio matching are employed to adjust the analogue circuit's filter frequencies. This offers superior tracking behaviour and far more precise left/right channel balance, compared to conventional approaches.

Another of CR-1's unique and powerful features is a pair of rotary controls that control the damping of each filter bank. These damping controls dramatically improve the acoustic summing through the crossover region, by compensating for each speaker system's frequency response. At the center of the front panel, a single intuitive, rotary control permits quick adjustment of the relative level between the subwoofer(s) and main speakers.

To minimize distortion and noise, CR-1 employs top-grade component parts in its all-analogue audio circuitry: 1% precision resistors, JFET-input audio-grade op-amps, polypropylene film-and-foil capacitors and metallized-polypropylene film capacitors, to name just a few. We also build CR-1 right here in the U.S.A., to ensure top quality and dependability.

CR-1's input-output design makes it equally adaptable to studio, mastering suite or audiophile two-channel playback environments. To accommodate dual-mode systems, we also include a bypass feature that engages a pass-through from a dedicated "Managed Bass Input" on the rear panel, to the CR-1's subwoofer outputs. "Like all JL Audio subwoofers, the unit abstains from using off the shelf components. Drivers, enclosures and electronics are all produced exclusively in-house. Every design begins with a purpose-built subwoofer driver, developed with both a specific cabinet size and power range in mind. The driver is then optimised for linear motor and suspension performance."

"As for the driver, the F212v2 uses the very same W7 platform used in JL's Fathom and Gotham subwoofers. No less than six US patents cover the W7, the company says, including the driver's OverRoll Surround. Unlike most drivers, which sit inside the frame, the F212v2's is located on the outer edge of the frame. This maximises the cone's radiating surface and provides greater excursion capability, says the manufacturer. It can place additional stress on the driver, so JL Audio's W cone design is used, which is architecturally reinforced to allow it to withstand rapid changes in speed and direction without distortion."

Instead, it served as an impressive extension to my own speakers. The consummate guest, the F212v2 understands the importance of keeping quiet just as much as it does speaking up. Top this off with first-class build and attention to detail, and JL Audio has produced another winner. If you've got a big room and want powerful yet articulate bass, the F212v2 may be just what you're looking for. Either way, it comes highly recommended.

The lucky few who have heard a well-integrated subwoofer in a great audio system know that the subwoofer's effect is profound. While everyone expects the bass extension to improve, most are shocked at the transformation that occurs in the main speakers. They simply open up, delivering improved dynamics, superior imaging and more low-level detail. Many describe it as the greatest speaker upgrade they have ever made.

Over the years, we have calibrated many subwoofer systems in highly critical listening environments, and we have been frustrated by the limitations of active crossovers we have worked with. Tired of struggling with "blunt instruments", we felt that a higher precision tool was needed, so we decided to build it and call it "CR-1". CR-1 is built around two banks of precision Linkwitz-Riley low-pass and high-pass filters. Multiplying DACs with monolithic ratio matching are employed to adjust the analogue circuit's filter frequencies. This offers superior tracking behaviour and far more precise left/right channel balance, compared to conventional approaches.

Another of CR-1's unique and powerful features is a pair of rotary controls that control the damping of each filter bank. These damping controls dramatically improve the acoustic summing through the crossover region, by compensating for each speaker system's frequency response. At the center of the front panel, a single intuitive, rotary control permits quick adjustment of the relative level between the subwoofer(s) and main speakers.

To minimize distortion and noise, CR-1 employs top-grade component parts in its all-analogue audio circuitry: 1% precision resistors, JFET-input audio-grade op-amps, polypropylene film-and-foil capacitors and metallized-polypropylene film capacitors, to name just a few. We also build CR-1 right here in the U.S.A., to ensure top quality and dependability.

CR-1's input-output design makes it equally adaptable to studio, mastering suite or audiophile two-channel playback environments. To accommodate dual-mode systems, we also include a bypass feature that engages a pass-through from a dedicated "Managed Bass Input" on the rear panel, to the CR-1's subwoofer outputs. This makes it convenient to switch from two-channel to multi-channel mode.

While my reference subs deliver more output below 20Hz in comparison, they don't measure up to the quality of bass I heard from the JL Audio drivers. The Fathom f110 v2 is a heavyweight subwoofer capable of filling the most demanding rooms with powerful low-frequency output and reference-class sound quality. The combination of an ultra-long throw W7 13.5-inch driver and a very powerful switching amplifier give it the kind of output normally associated with far larger subwoofer systems.

Low distortion, excellent dynamic capabilities and shockingly deep bass extension will allow you to experience all the excitement of the most demanding cinematic material, while also being able to reproduce all the nuance and texture of your most delicate musical material.

A complete set of signal processing features is easily accessible on the front surface of every Fathom. These include a highly flexible low-pass filter, variable phase, switchable polarity, e.l.f. trim and our powerful Digital Automatic Room Optimization (D.A.R.O.) system.
