If using Bluetooth, how much influence does the player have on the sound quality?

Not much, it seems to me. The headset has its own DAC. Of course if both source and headset support a high quality codec like aptX or LDAC that helps.

The source should support the best codec the receiver does, obviously. Beyond that, there's nothing it can do to influence the sound quality.

Thanks, that's what I figured. Implication is that there's not much point in getting a high-end Astell & Kern or Sony portable player unless you use wired.

Another aspect of the same issue is that discovering which codecs any particular headset supports is often not easy.
