Identify the stylus

Hi

I've just picked upa Rega P3 with a MM cartridge which is green in colour. I'm trying to identify what the cartridge is - the Elys 2 seems to be the blue one and I can find a red one but green?

Anyone know ?

Yes, almost certainly the original Bias. I have one still, purchased in the 80s.

But green, it's a Rega Bias.

That's the one! Strange though as it looks almost new and the deck has a RB300 arm apparantly. How old would it be?

Mine's certainly still playable. I didn't use it for more than a few months when it was new. Not at all a bad cartridge, but not a giant-killer, IMHO.

Bias had mediocre reviews at the time. Most bought the AT95 or 110 instead.

My memory for these things is terrible, but I believe the Bias was replaced with the Bias 2 about 5 years ago or so. These cartridges have great bass weight and scale, are very good at minimising surface noise but related to that they're not the most open sounding either. I suspect the latter is the cause of any bad reviews, but it is a very easy cartridge to live with, which is something most reviewers do not get time to appreciate.

DOn't suppose anyone knws the rcommended tracking weight for the Bias 1?

Sounds a lot better than the modern Super Bias and Elys 2 IMO.
