its interesting indeed... reminds me of a little trick i sometimes use.
i often used to use my phone for music when i'm in the bath (now i have speakers in the bathroom). But it always sounded rubbish.
if you put your phone into a large-ish empty glass. it acts like a megaphone, and boosts the sound, often making a lot of difference to the lower frequencies and midband. Its not a subtle change. Being able to boost the volume means you can run the phones speaker quite low, and thus not distort it.
