I heard on Radio 3 this morning that Hyperion has been sold to Universal. The presenter said that this was not yet reflected on Hyperion's website, but this would seem to confirm it :

What a pity. Hyperion has provided many of the discs in my collection over the years. Universal, recently, less so.

At least there are plenty of other independents out there. Alpha and Channel Classics produce some good discs, though the former is part of a larger group, Outhere, which also seems to own Linn Records. Didn't know that.

Hopefully Universal will be hands-off, Hyperion have a good selection of artists and still record interesting repertoire.

Universal still have some big name artists but seems to me that many Orchestras are now on own brand recording labels... Eg LSO live, BR Klassik, even the Berlin Phil.

Marc Andre Hamelin, a great pianist who records with Hyperion, has just confirmed on Twitter:

“Pleased to tell you that, following the purchase of Hyperion by Universal, their catalog will soon be available for streaming!”

Hopefully they’ll do the marketing and accounting functions and leave the Hyperion technical and A&R team intact.
