I beg to differ, unless you are referring to Roman market places. Meeting places generally and modern internet meeting places in particular are FORUMS. This usage dates, according to my new O.E.D., from the 18th century.

The occasional use of 'fora' rather smacks of pretentiousness, but is erroneous, regardless.

So what about "memorandum", would you also have the plural as memorandums? I say memoranda.

What about "curriculum". Would you say curriculums or curricula?

I skirted the problem by saying useless paper thingy(ies) from the boss.

Thingy — singular
Thingies — plural

. ^ I agree with that. Although I don't shelter under a pseudonym, those that choose to should have their choice respected.

It is only an issue when people abuse their anonymity and initiate confrontation.

I do know someone very well - as a brief description of him - 6 foot 4, 19 stone in weight, and in a job which entails him to grapple people on occasion, wrestle them to the ground, and escort them away..

Scary? yeah, he is a bit.

His view on the internet? - Is that anybody talking to him in an insulting way is no different to someone doing it to his face. He really is capable of looking someone up who was stupid enough to insult him on the web and confront them.

Thing is, you have to approach speaking to people on the web as if they are like this guy, because you never know. Also, if you insult someone on the web, your comment sits on PFM or wherever FOREVER!. I look at old posts I've made sometimes and just cringe..

Serge,

Do you go the whole hog?

exempli gratia

"It is one of the characteristics of curriculums" and then change it to curriculorum because it is a genitive plural?

Where does this excursion into Latin usage actually end?

I'm going to lock this one now, purely from a database management perspective due to thread length - it's getting to the size it places stress on the forum search facility. Please feel free to carry any relevant topics into a new thread.
