HEGEL MUSIC SYSTEMS SOUNDENGINE TECHNOLOGY -

Hegel Music Systems in a nutshell - Each thing can be found in other amps, but NEVER all three together. This is thanks to our patented SoundEngine technology -

1. Damping factor - is basically a description for bass control. The higher the damping factor, the better the bass control. Modern amplifiers typically have lower bass control than they used to have 20 years ago. The reason is that the tools you use to increase damping factor will also increase distortion (next - 2). Not so in a Hegel amplifier -
Industry average: 60-80
A really good amp: 100-150
20 years ago: +/-150
Hegel: 1000-4000
Meaning: Hegel can boogie

2. Distortion - is a description of the level of extra sound that is generated in the amplifier. Meaning sound that is not part of the recording. Distortion usually makes an amplifier sound either muffled or harsh. It will mask the finer details. Modern amps usually have fairly low distortion, and obtain this by sacrificing bass-control (previous - 1). Hegel have among the lowest distortion on the market, and it has is in combination with extremely high bass control. Meaning - it will sound incredibly dynamic, detailed AND smooth.

3. Power consumption - The third benefit of the SoundEngine technology is low power consumption in idle. We are actually using up to 60% less power. Preventing the amplifier of running too hot, and it is good for the environment. The technical term is low bias.

Hegel SoundEngine Technology video with Founder and technical director of Hegel, Bent Holter

The story begins in 1988. Bent Holter - student at the Technical University in Trondheim (NTNU) decided to do a thesis under the original design of the amplifier transistor that would cure the problems of classical systems. Enemy number one - harmonic distortion. Holter somehow could not accept the fact that when we give a simple signal to the amplifier, you will get that signal plus something else - distortion produced by electronics. Fighting distortion usually meant the deterioration of other parameters, including damping factor. Holter decided to break out the classic schemes and developed a project that became the basis of what we know today as SoundEngine Technology. And where the name of the company came from? Well, after hours Bent played in a rock-metal band called The Hegel Band. When they needed amplifiers for concerts, Holter suggested building them himself. His ideas took on real shape, but it took lots of money to refine the technology. Help came from Telenor - one of the biggest players in the telecommunications industry.

The early nineties were a period of prosperity for the brand. First they ensured the patented solution known today as SoundEngine, later developed a DAC (1994) and the first CD Player (1996). Over the next eight years the company has steadily improved the product range and generated more and more profits from year to year. When the financial crisis came, most companies immediately took a defensive strategy which meant cutting costs. Norwegian designer played differently. He hired new engineers to design devices. Some time later, brand new D/A converters were born.

Today Hegel is one of the best established brands in Hi-Fi market, producing integrated, pre and power amplifiers as well as CD players and some of the most modern and sophisticated D/A converters. The SoundEngine Technology was just a start. Today there are six more original technical solutions in Hegel's portfolio. The company has dealers in 32 countries and its products are sold all over the world. Awards and press reviews speak for themselves.

Hegel's reference H30 (mono/stereo) power amplifier

H30.jpg

H30-02_686_537_80.jpg

With a power rating of more than 1,1 kW in 8 ohms it is on the verge of being easier to measure the H30 in horsepower. The massive H30 mono power amplifiers from Hegel play any loudspeaker in the world with ease and authority. The H30 is our best power amplifier ever, and is definitely a combatant for being the best power amplifier in the world. The H30 is developed as a mono block, but there is also the possibility to use it as a stereo power amplifier to start with if you are on a budget. Progress is a one way street and so for our power amplifiers. The H30 is using a new and improved version of the patented Hegel SoundEngine amplifier technology. This further reduce all types of distortion. In addition to the improve SoundEngine we are also using the highest possible level of the Hegel FET-technology in the input stage and the voltage gain stage. This technology reduce a very specific type of distortion called Harmonic Distortion. This particular type of distortion causes what many people call "transistor sound", and this is therefore dramatically reduced in the H30. It will simply let the music reach you in a different way than what you have ever experienced before.

Normally, when you compare a less powerful amplifier with a more powerful amplifier, the most powerful will have a more potent bass, more attack and more "SLAM" than the less powerful one. This is how it works up to a certain point. The Hegel H30 is beyond this point, and all of a sudden the differences become different. The H30 will simply play with a completely undisputed control, regardless of the loudspeakers. The bass is tremendously deep, but not dominating. The level of detail in the high frequencies are unheard of, but never overbearing. Usually a demo of the H30 and P30 combination ends with clapping hands and a whispering "wooooow..."

So what sets the H30 apart from the H4SE? There are several technical differences. As a mono power amplifier, the H30 has a fully balanced output stage which reduces distortion and cancel out distortion. Further more, the H30 has a much more advanced input stage and voltage gain stage. Both the H4SE and the H30 uses hand matched transistors, but only the H30 uses the special combination of JFET and MOS-FET transistors. This further reduces higher order harmonic distortion in the H30. The third big difference between the two is H30's output transistors. These are of higher quality, with less distortion, than the ones in the H4SE. In addition to this, the use of dual transformers in the H30, reduces mechanical noise. The higher budget also allow the use of better parts throughout the H30.

Introducing the next generation of Hegel D/A-Converters - The HD12, introduces a combination of great new functionality as well as greatly improved sound quality. First of all, a brand new USB interface allows you to use all common sampling frequencies up to 24 bit / 192 kHz. Also, this new interface allows playback of native DSD-files, without conversion to PCM. Furthermore, the HD12 has equal quality on the 2 optical and 1 coaxial inputs. Versatility - With an HD12 you can upgrade virtually any system to Hegel standards. There is a very high quality headphone output, regular RCA phono outputs as well as true balanced XLR outputs. This means you can connect to any receiver/amplifier and/or subwoofer. However, the built-in and remote-controlled volume attenuator also allows direct connection to a pair of active loudspeakers or to a power amplifer. High End to the people.

Sound - New research in the digital domain has resulted in extremely low jitter levels. In particular, great improvements have been made to “skirting”, a distortion that reduces the timing and precision in the sound. You hear it very well in drums and dynamic elements of the music. Another large improvement comes in the analog part of the D/A-Converter. We are talking about a noise floor of -145dB. It means the HD12 brings out so much more of those tiny details that suck you in to the music.

Quite simply a significant upgrade and a remarkable D/A-Converter.

In the H80 integrated amplifier with digital and analog inputs, technology from the Reference Hegel products has virtually been pouring down. Hegel’s patented SoundEngine output stages, the Reference quality preamp and our critically acclaimed DACs. All in one box. A Music Machine! The H80 features 5 digital inputs with 24 bit technology, 1 true balanced analog input and 2 unbalanced analog inputs (one of of which can be configured to be a Home Theatre direct input). The USB input even allows you to use the supplied remote control to maneuver within play lists on your computer. Skip / Play / Pause the songs. And not only that, it is all plug & play. The DAC inside the H80 is based on Hegel’s stand-alone DACs, which have been recognized by critics as some of the best in the industry. Much thanks to Hegel’s proprietary re-clocking technique and the unique way we implement the digital components. The result of which is less additives to the music. You only hear what you are supposed to, and that makes the sound so much more life-like.

The analog stage is equally as impressive. The pre amplifier comes directly from one of our Reference standalone pre amplifiers. The design bases itself on components brought in from far beyond the regular audio industry, and the benefit is very low noise. This means that all the finer details are preserved, and you can virtually “feel” the room the artist is performing in. In many ways, we could define the sound as “the sum of all things that aren’t there”. But then there are all the things that actually are there. Brought there by our patented SoundEngine technology. This not only reduces distortion, but it also dramatically increase something called damping factor. This is a description of bass control, and gives the H80 a level of punch, driving power and dynamics that is completely unheard of in this price range. This combination of versatility and quality of sound is what gives it the name Music Machine.

The H160 amplifier has one purpose, and one purpose only - to allow you to connect whatever device you want and make it sound as good as it possibly can. First of all, we designed an integrated amplifier with a broader set of connections than any other amplifier on the market, in this category. There is a wide variety of connections, varying from classic balanced and unbalanced analog connections, to Home Theatre integration and onwards to various digital inputs. You can also stream wireless music to it from devices with Apple AirPlay or DLNA. Secondly, we realized that not all the devices you choose to connect are designed to be high-end music performers. This meant we had to develop a range of unique technologies and implementations to make certain that your phone, tablet or CD-player could reach its fullest potential. The H160incorporates technology that “repairs” some of the damaged caused by a low quality source.

Finally, we integrated the new with the classic, and included our award-winning and worldwide patent holding amplifier technology, the SoundEngine. This amplifier design completely turns ordinary amplifier designs upside down. The result is a purer and smoother sound with low distortion, as well as ultra dynamic bass due to a high damping factor. And yes, you can also use your headphones, and it uses up to 60% less power than an ordinary amplifier. So, what are you standing there thinking about?
