Heathrow 3rd runway

According to the BBC link...

“After surveying more than 6,000 people in the US, Germany, France and the UK, UBS found that 21% had reduced the number of flights they took over the last year.

Only 16% of British respondents said they were cutting back on flying, but 24% of US travellers were worried enough to change their flying habits.”

So ignoring what socio economic group were being surveyed and whether or not it reflected a mix of population let’s assume the 6000 were spread equally among the four nations.
So that’s 1,500 Brits.
Of whom 16% were cutting back on flying.
That’s 250 people.

Big deal!

You seem to be assuming that the British population is 1,500 people. 16% of 70 million comes out a tad bigger than 250 people. :)

The survey group was 6000 across 4 nations.
So 1500 per country.

You seem to presume it is representative of the UK population.

1500 out of 60,000,000 is totally insignificant.

Yes, but that’s how surveys work, innit. If they got their sampling anything like right, extrapolating to the population is not unreasonable, factoring in an appropriate margin of error.

and allegedly, Johnson won't take it to the Supreme Court. Probably because they are enemies of the people (c) DM

If they were to build it - by the time they did - airline traffic will have dropped below the point at which it was remotely necessary
IMO - punters will eventually get the message that flying is a bad thing for the world and cut back or, as in my case stop

Oh dear, FB and most of the media ruling what we think. Has anyone actually read the judgement?
What did the courts say? Did they say that the third runway at Heathrow is illegal? They have not. They have been clear on that:

"Our decision should be properly understood. We have not decided, and could not decide, that there will be no third runway at Heathrow. We have not found that a national policy statement supporting this project is necessarily incompatible with the United Kingdom’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and mitigating climate change under the Paris Agreement, or with any other policy the Government may adopt or international obligation it may undertake. "

They simple ruled that the government have not followed the procedure set down by Parliament and published their reasoning with regard to environmental impact. All the government have to do is publish those details.

They really won't. Humans are selfish.

Air traffic represents less than 4-5% of the global CO2 emissions whereas road traffic accounts for 15% of these direct emissions.

People aren't giving up their cars either.

They are going electric in the foreseeable future, air travel cannot drop fossil fuels yet

Does building electric vehicle have no carbon footprint ?... do they run on fresh air ? Are the roads they run on carbon neutral ? ( as an aside , it takes over 500 gallon of water to make one car tyre )

There are too many people and they all want everything.
