Genius versus Technical Ability

Having technical ability doesn’t get in the way of being a great musician or also having the ability to play with emotion. Although I don’t care much for the stuff he does now, John McLauglin who is surely one of the most gifted guitarists around played with exceptionally high levels of intensity with the Mahavishnu Orchestra, especially live.

You only have to look at Yes in their "heyday". All virtuose skillmeisters, never produced a tune worth a damn.

Technique is great to have, but you need an idea and it's usually easy to spot those without one.

There's a similar debate about the classical music world. Are all recitalists just technique, or do they bring new ideas to their interpretation of music written by someone else?

But it does seem that there are more noodlists among the plank-spaking fraternity than other instrumental subgroups.

Matter of opinion. Try the Yes album, Fragile. Tunes galore. Anyway what's so great about tunes?

Agree re: first Van Halen album
