Garrard 301/SME - P1 spacer?

Hopefully a straightforward question. I'm getting a slate plinth built for my 301 and I was wondering as to the need for a P1 spacer. I noticed that Gromit had dispensed with it on his 401 and mounted his 3009 directly to the plinth. There looks to be a fair amount height adjustment on my Series IV but will it be enough for the height of a 301 motor unit? Anyone tried? Anything that saves me a few bob at this stage!

I very much doubt I'd be able to get correct VTA.

I did it with my 3009 and my 301 without a spacer - but you end up with the arm WAY up in the air. Better to use a spacer IMHO.
