FoS - anyone else here?

Amazing. But I’m a bit sad that the record is electric now. Oh well it is the future.

I wonder how fast these lecy cars will be, when they don’t need batteries because fuel cells have taken over (once everyone realises that battery power is environmentally worse than combustion.)

That will make them super fast. I think that the ‘fan cars’ tech might re-emerge, as they’ll then be so light!

Gone t'wert days when lichen crawled round circuit taking millions nay billions of years, you try.... cont p94

Will the batteries last up pikes peak?
Not just lasted, but took the outright record in a manner worth watching.

It's awesome stuff. That VW project has first redefined expectations at PIke's Peak*, and then very recently, the Nurburgring.

I like it, a lot.

I don't think fuel cells are the way forward - battery storage is a denser, more-flexible /responsive way to dump power into a motor. Currently the sheer power density and load-range/peak-output capability of li-ion tech is killing it. At some point the future might involve a hybrid of the two (possibly with even-more flexible battery tech based on sodium for peak load delivery - nb. NA-ion variants a tech as yet under-exploited, but likely better for the environment -and sodium is plentiful, and cheap)

Exciting times.

* Pike's Peak footage is a great watch - what can be done by VW with 500kW max, way les than some of the homegrown entries boast from the inevitable blown v8. and similarly, Just.So.Many pundits implied a battery-powered car would be dull-ish, but the crowd comments, whenever you find a vid of it on Youtube, are mostly filled with expressions like 'holy f&*k'! as the VW squats and doesn't merely accelerate, so much as just eff-off out of each bend past the crowd.

It is all striking footage, IMO right up there with Ari Vatanan's 'Climb Dance' film of the same route in a Group B Peugeot 406 in the 80s (long before the route was paved in entirety). Autre temps, autre mores. The future of driving is exciting once again.

Linky to the Pike's Peak run..

And the Nurburgring:

Though they have a long way to go to beat the Porsche, which appears to have a much higher top speed (looks like it is speeded up video but it isn't..):

Goodwood is 41 seconds, a show, and I guess relatively easy to set up the car for....I was impressed all the same. It went round Molecombe (the only 'serious' corner, two big offs today) like it was on rails.

I dunno nuffink abaahht modern leccy cars, but the Land Speed Record wos 'eld by a leccy car at abahht 75 mph s0metime in the late 19th C..

Comparing ICE to electric cars is like comparing cars to bikes. Electric cars should have their own class and record.

It should be interesting next week when the New Lotus 130 all electric Hypercar is launched, I believe it's at the FOS now under a shroud of security.

It will show if its a folly by the pricing of it. Will it be affordable to the Lotus enthusiast who's already seen the marque hit Porsche price structures? or will it be an unaffordable (to most) show case oddball once more?

And unplug you Tony?

Preferable to watching Formula E. We all have different tastes and needs, but I can’t imagine leaving home at 5am to drive to a long queue to then go and sit in a little grandstand to then watch electric cars driving around a little track in London. No appeal whatsoever.
