Footwear - all purpose thread for footwear

With good reason. When you're standing around on hard hospital floors and walking the long corridors all day, Crocs are a real blessing. We all wore them, although I believe since I've retired they're no longer permitted in hospitals.

You may scoff at Crocs, but if you're unlucky enough to develop arthritis in your feet you'll be blessing them.

and in restaurant kitchens - they now make specialised versions for certain environments. https://www.crocs.co.uk/c/work

I have problems with my ankles and feet, and i bought a pair of the kitchen one...they are non slip and give my feet and ankles welcome relief when standing cooking for a few hours.

Having amassed an impressive array of walking boots and shoes, now only wear Vivobarefoot (after recommendation from fishie) Most comfortable shoes ever that have finally resolved plantar fasciitis problems.

I need to find some decent sandals which might last at least a couple of years+ and that don't cost the earth. Failed to get around to buying any last year as I couldn't see anything I fancied - all the shops here seem to stock sandals that look and feel like cheap plastic slabs with velcro straps glued to them (I've had these before and they always fall to pieces quickly). Anyone got any better recommendations?

what is the use case? walking, hiking, smart, leather, walking in water? do you want lots of adjustments, fine grained adjustments or coarse grained?

what do you define as "decent", what is your budget? open toe, closed toe?

i have a predecessor of these (mine are about 4 years old) and they are excellent https://www.salomon.com/en-gb/shop-emea/product/tech-amphib-4.html#color=39174

United Nude ones are nice, mine are about 2 years old: https://unitednude.eu/collections/mens-sandals

Formal cap toes by Fosters and Cheaney. Some made to order boots and brogues by Alfred Sargent.

For casual, mainly Picolinos and Converse. Walking boots by Mammut. Walking shoes by Meindl. Ski boots by Raichle.

Remember a story, not sure how true. Crocs were originally Japanese and only ever worn in bathroom/ toilet areas. They were absolutely horrified to come over here and find peeps walking down Oxford street in them.

Elton John and good taste are only distantly related. He's worn some awful outfits in his time.

these shoes are an abomination - i am a footwear guru and know all about such things:

these are better though

i used to have something very similar from United Nude - IIRC the upper split after about 18 months.

Since Crocs are a US-based company, that sounds like an urban legend.

Fair enough. Shame though. A faux pas in another country is full of comic possibilities…

I've been trying some vivo's out and have just sent them back as the insole on the left one started sliding up the back of my heel as I walked, which was annoying as hell. Shame as I was very into the idea of the foot working naturally.

According to physio I have hypermobility in both ankles and very little in the way of supporting ligament left (due to historical ankle twisting). Basically, my feet flop about on the end of my legs and this causes achilles tendonitis and shin splints as the wrong parts of the leg are taking the strain. He advised me only to wear support shoes, and use ankle braces when walking distance. I'm having a right pain finding shoes/trainers that don't hurt one foot or another at some point. I was very hopeful of the vivos and might try some other barefoot shoes out. Also looking at the ON range of support trainers as the next experiment (it is not cheap trying to find footwear that works!). It's a right pain having to concentrate on walking, and not just take each step for granted.

Probably open toe but not too concerned as long as the overall design allows lots of air through. Just general casual use, dog walking when sunny and dry, garden, couple of hours on the beach etc. In the past I've generally had things that looked vaguely similar to those Peter Storm ones you linked to (think my last were hi-tec) but wondered if there were more interesting and longer-lasting options in the ~£50 area. Maybe that's all you can get for that sort of money.

I'm not too far from Clarks village in Street, so maybe I should take a trip out there sometime. They have some with leather straps that look OK.

You’re only worried about the shoes!

I still have a red, knee high, pair of slip-on Kickers I bought in 1976. They got a lot of use back then, not so much now.

I do quite like Birks, I have a couple of pairs of Solomon’s for walking & a pair of TOMS for when on holiday. I don’t like to see people toes when in a restaurant, standards really have slipped.

I find birkenstocks very uncomfortable.

toes in a restaurant? you peering under the tables? weird foot fetish?
