Fool's Mate

Superb album from Peter Hammill. Can anyone tell me why the cover depicts Scholar's Mate, rather than Fool's Mate?

I read that interview a few years ago, which made it all the more puzzling. Surely, Peter knows the difference between Scholar's mate and Fools mate. I thought there might be some cryptic meaning behind it all. I did send an e-mail to sofasound a few years ago, but got no reply.

Could be they didn't know the difference when it was done. There's a lot of folks who think scholar's mate is fool's mate.

Apparently, In Poland scholar's mate is known as fool's mate. For someone whom you think of as quintessentially English, maybe he has some Polish ancestry. It would be nice to think of him cheering as Domarski's shot went under Shilton's body at Wembley in 73.
