Fela Kuti Documentary tonight BBC

Pete MB&D

Pete Maddex, the one and only!
Fela Kuti was something of an artistic rarity. Because while hugely successful, in his home country of Nigeria and beyond, he was also fiercely uncompromising, both musically and politically.
In this Arena film, friends and family tell how varied strands of influence fused to inform the style that was later labelled Afrobeat. Jazz horns, West African high-life, Latin rhythms, American funk and pan-African activism all went into the pot. Here, Tony Allen and Nile Rodgers are among those analysing the spicy sonic soup that emerged. Its chief ingredient, though, was the electrifying charisma that made Kuti a hero to some – and a devil to others.
