Bloody hell - kiddie porn, drink driving and common assault - that is some CV.

I wonder if he has to forfeit his MPs pension.

Suspended 2 years sentence too.
Lucky, lucky man.

As for his pension he was no longer a serving MP so I doubt it.
Did A. Nazir Ahmed, Baron Ahmed. Jonathan Aitken. Garry Allighan. Jeffrey Archer. James Tuchet lose theirs?

There are plenty of threads around to out the others, this one seems to be about Joyce.

Nope, they certainly do count. Jonathon Aitkens crime and his attempted cover up is one of the worst. I quite like to interrupt the dominant narrative pedalled by the most vociferous PFMers now and again though.

I think Joyce is right up there in the shittery stakes. I think he trumps Aitken & Archer, at least they spent some time inside.

He was not a Labour MP when the offences were committed. Prior to that he achieved the rank of Major in the Army.

So far as I know being convicted of a criminal offence has no impact on accrued pension in any occupation - how could it?

I am not going to make a Party Political point, but this latest scandal simply shows that corruption and perversion is to be found across the board in politics. I don't even know if it worse than within the Priesthood, or even other vocations such as Scouting, or Football Coaches for junior teams.

It is the human condition that a proportion are wrong ones.

One of the most comic but also serious maxims I ever heard was this:

"To err is human; to forgive is not RAF policy."

Best wishes from George

I agree entirely with your sentiments George.

There is no point trying to make political capital out of the transgressions they make in their private lives.

But we shouldn’t tolerate it from our public representatives who should at least aspire to the highest standards of conduct.

Mmmm, where does Boris Johnson stand on this?

About three years ago a guy where I work was found guilty of similar to Joyce.

“When the equipment was analysed it was found to contain 804 still and moving images in the most serious level A category, 818 still and moving level B images and more than 40,000 still and moving images in the lowest level C category.

There were also 3,000 prohibited images of children,.

Nxxxxxxg, 59, now of Xxxxx Xxxxx, Stowmarket, admitted three offences of making indecent images of children and possessing prohibited images of children.

He was given a 16-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to do 150 hours unpaid work in the community.”

At least there’s some sort of consistency in sentencing. He is ex-RAF, but I’m not sure they’ll have any interest in him.

My knowledge is well out of date but 35 years ago (I said it was out of date!) in the Civil Service scheme criminal offences in connection with employment could in theory result in a loss/reduction in pension. I never ever saw it implemented. It would not surprise me if similar provisions are buried in the small print of modern schemes. I seem to recall it was a possibility in the case of Dr Shipman see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3398153.stm

Pensions are nothing to do with your employer except that they choose the provider and usually contribute towards it. They don’t have access to the fund.

As I said the Civil Service scheme certainly did allow for pensions to be reduced/removed in the past (I had to deal with such matters in my job). As far as other schemes are concerned I quote from the Shipman report
"Ministers directed 100% of Shipman's personal benefits from the NHS pension scheme should be forfeited." That looks like access to the fund to me.
