Edward Colston: Bristol slave trader statue 'was an affront'

I think it is time now for a truth and reconciliation process, they could ask Desmond Tutu to chair it, he has the experience and the personal insight and he is an Anglican Archbishop after all. Johnson will attempt a white wash but history shows as with Bloody Sunday, Hillsborough and Stephen Lawrence, you can only hide your dirt under the carpet for so long. I think this will be a task for the forthcoming Labour government- Johnson doesn’t have the integrity and it flies in the face of his ethnic nationalist beliefs.

I agree, but sadly I don’t think Labour have anything like the spine for it. I can’t see them standing up to the flag-waving white nationalists in their voter base. Just look at the shit Emily Thornberry got for criticising them a while back. As far as I’m concerned Labour are about 25% UKIP, and likely some EDL in there too. We’d stand a far better chance with a progressive coalition as the other parties just have more integrity to bring on the issue.

Can’t bear listening to white ppl speaking on behalf of black ppl about progress. What the actual ****?

it’s like habitually beating someone up badly and then congratulating them on lasting longer than the last time and throwing them some small change to contribute to their Uber to ER.

Johnson has talked about rewriting history as if history is set in stone by the writers. It isn’t. History is a process of investigation, it has to be open to revision and reassessment if it is to be of any value to the here and now. Johnson isn’t about looking forward to new interpretations, he’s about preservation of the past, a past that preserves his privilege and elite status.

It’s a truism that if we don’t learn from history, we’re doomed to repeat it. Johnson is a repeater. If we want a new future that is better for all marginalised groups, for those who are not of the privileged elite, we need a new Prime Minister

Hard to think Tutu would still be going by then, he must 90ish by now. I think the chances of finding someone of that ilk are probably gone now.

Look at the shit Diane Abbot got from her own party, more to the point. Labour has to move forward on the unequivocal principle of black and white unity.

If the objective is to remove the Tories i would have thought the only way would be to get behind a Labour government. They would of course need to match their offering with public expectation.

What exactly is this progressive coalition, Tony? You mention it a lot. It definitely can’t include the LibDems, they have no integrity at all. We know very little about the Greens because they’ve never had to make any decisions under real life circumstances. Not much left, really.

Labour is the only party that can replace the tories.

Very interesting and weird times , of course black lives matter and BAME people are vulnerable to covid 19 so when a JD sports store opened the other day, they attend in numbers pushing each other, closely packed together in an effort to get in first, perhaps loss of life is ok if you can save a few quid on trainers or something!

We kneel at the feet of the Colston's of this world who make money on the backs of slavery and the work of others, we are to a great extent governed by a group of people who because of their background have very little experience of how we ordinary people live. The most wonderful socialism ever enacted in this country the NHS always seems carry the threat of privatisation and will no doubt reward some winker with a statue in years ahead.

We sit and watch the Cenotaph taking a hit from scum who cannot be considered British who but for those people who lost their lives (rather than gave them) might not enjoy living their own lives. Cvnts.

A rambling rant..... not even mentioned the Bullingdon Arseholes club........sorry.

Can't bear listening to white ppl speaking on behalf of black ppl about white ppl speaking on behalf of black ppl personally. They don't want to hear your white outrage.

If only it were that simple. All the bile is directed at personalities both here and in the U.S. when each is merely the figurehead of a warped system.

IMO the moral of Animal Farm still applies. Or a little more up to date (and pithy) 'Won't Get Fooled Again'.

Perhaps we could use the momentum gained from the Colton furore and take a look into the family history of Parliamentarians. I’d expect that most of the old, Establishment families would have built their fortunes off the exploitation of slaves, in some way or another. All those grand families still stalking the corridors.

We should start to demand they apologise for their families’ past misdeeds. The loss of face could be salutary, and might help highlight how much power is vested in ancient and exploitative financial interests.

What a load of bollocks put not surprised given your other posts.

Lets tar and feather the miscreants and in full glare of all the media in Trafalgar Square and invite the world's press to show how seriously we take the misdeeds carried out by our ancestors hundreds of years ago. I think the first step will be to revisit the films/videos that the Maoists made in China in the Cultural Revolution followed by the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot so we make a thoroughly professional job of the manufactured atonement of the hapless individuals who failed to dissuade their forebears not to commit their heinous crimes.

First thing we will need to do is ascertain how far back we intend going. 300, 500 or a round 1000 years.

I was thinking that myself. Much of the inherited wealth that still saturates the Conservative Party and its donors, traditions and institutions goes back hundreds of years and are riddled with blood money from slavery and colonialism. It speaks volumes just how many of the statues on the racism ‘hit list’ were Tory MPs at one point. Basically the party is slavery, it is imperialism, it is violent conquest and property theft. It is why they can’t take anything but a revisionist, flag-waving, whitewashing, brushing under the carpet stance on this whole thing. They can’t move forward because they are the past. It carries on to this day through Windrush, Grenfell, Hostile Environment, Brexit etc etc too. It all stems from the same broken mindset.

PS I see the flag-waving gammon has turned up...

There are some posters on here who, if they said that, would upset and offend me. Happily, you are not one of them.
